Have you tried another pair of speakers? Speaker wire being crimped can cause this problem over time. If you have already tried that then replace the batteries in order to prevent a low battery solution [you'd be surprised--I've even done that before in my MP3 after similar exp. which mines a samsung..]

In the beginning he created the groove
And with the groove he made us move
And he made you reach out
And raise your hands in the air
To rejoin us and sing a song of love
Sing a song of happiness
Everybody's moving to the beat
Music makes me wild and move my feet
I see, I feel the need to get away
From the pain and pressure of the day
the dj comes to my rescue
and through the beat you gotta move, too
The people's screamin'
gotta love , I love
Singin' mister dj
I was having this exact same problem! So frustrating because you know that the mat does work since it works in the menu. Anyway, I found this on the Konami website: This problem indicates that the dance mat is not plugged into the 1st
player port. Please check that your dance mat is plugged into the port
which is closest to the power button. This port also has 1 dot next to
it, to indicate that it is for the first player. Otherwise, the system
will not register that there is a first player at all, which is why the
mat won’t work in any other port than the 1st player port.
nah, the problem is the DLC song called "I Am Murloc". When I found this out, I went to delete it. Now, if you did this earlier you have to perform system maintenance before you play guitar hero. That is where you go to the system (purple background) spot and open memory. When you see your hard drive press y and then you should see rename and format. Press X+X+LB++RB+X+X. Then go to play it and see which files work. If you beat I am Murloc on your favorite file like I did, then you just lost what you worked on for the past x months. It will never save again, no matter what you do. If no accounts work or you just don't want to do this, I'd suggest buying a memory card and beat the game again, saving it on that file. Good luck, Activision sucks!
If your songs are already in mp3 format than they must have been probably saved in 256 or 320 kbps. That is a waste of space since human ear can't tell the difference between anything higher than 192 kbps. For mp3 player it is more than enough to save songs with 128 kbps, especially if you're only using headphones. If the song takes approximately 4000 KB than you could fit close to 500 songs on 2GB mp3 player like yours. So, you need to check the beat rate of the songs and make convert those with beat rate over 192 to 192 or 128 which is just fine.
