Question about IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I recently installed Win7 on IBM intellistation zPro (6223), with RAID 1 SATA drives. All worked well for a few days, but then system would not boot. I can go into bios and see the RAID disks, and verify them, but when I boot into windows repair program and try and load the SATA drivers it just hangs. Any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot and isolate this problem.

With a IBM 6223 can I mix sata and scsi drives in the same machine?

Yes. you can use any mixture of different interfaces a PC. As long as you have the appropriate controller interface to plug the drive into, and your power supply is big enough to support the drive(s) you're using, there should not be a problem.

The only caveat is that if you want to boot from a drive type that is not part of the PC bios, this may not work.

Such as if the bios is so old that it only has IDE and you plug in a SATA or SCSI adapter, it may take some fiddling to make it boot properly. Many interface adapters have their own bios, and sometimes things are not as compatible as they should be.

Raid 0 on Intellistation 6221?

That particular work station comes with both IDE and SCSI drive interface controllers. The IDE drive should be used for your OS. The SCSI drives for your data storage. Now, the issue is to get the SCSI to work in RAID_0 as I understand.

You iwll need a RAID controller such as Adaptec AHA-3940AU WD SCSI Host Controller, which may be found on eBay (used) for a very affordable price. The driver software may be downloaded directly from Adaptec, so I suggest you do that in the iterim peroid, and store drivers on a USB thumb drive.

Hope this helps you.

IBM Blue Screen

I had the same problem with an Intellistation 6868 for years. It just wouldn't load XP but ran fine on Windows 2000 SP4. I tried 3 different XP Installation CD's with no luck. After several attempts at installing XP I bought a clean XP Upgrade from ebay.

It took me 3 goes to install it but eventually I got it in there. If you can get XP to start on the 6868 press F8 and start it in safe mode first then when it's booted fully, shut it down and and then start it clean again. It worked for me. I've been running it for 5 months now and it's fine.

I couldn't get it to work at all on the 6868's onboard IDE so I installed a PCI Raid Card and it boots fine on that.

System:

2 GB ECC RD Ram
2 x Seagate 320 GB 8MB Cache HDD on a Sunix ATA133 PCI Raid Card
