Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My Black & Decker bna17b mini fridge simply does not cool enough. The manual claims it should get down to 37 degrees Fahrenheit in a 70 degree room. I put the setting on high (coldest) and my milk spoiled in one day. I tried unplugging it for a few days then starting it up again. It has plenty of space where it is so it can circulate the air so I have no clue why it continues to not work properly. The temperature is MAYBE a little below room temp.

My Black and Decker Fridge doens't have a freezer but I have experienced the same problem. I thought it was my fridge so I swapped it with one I had at home and a year later it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions on how I can fix both?

Sorry Brian & Charles, but you missed the boat on this one.
This Black & Decker refrigerator uses Peltier Thermo-electric modules on heat sinks. If you blow off the dust and the unit still does not cool, these modules have probably gone bad.

The heat sinks/modules attach to the back of the fridge with two screws each. Unplug the power, remove the screws and then remove the heat sink/cooling fan units. On the refrigerator side will be a smooth plate with two wires coming out of it. Plug the fridge in and touch this plate. If it is not cold to the touch, your Peltier module is bad. You can buy new ones for about $20 each - Parts Express has the Velleman brand Peltier 2 model. But seriously, you'd probably be better off just buying a new fridge.

My daughters HS fridge has sat in the barn since she went off to college. Just tested it and the lower Peltier unit isn't working. It's easy for me to spend $20 with $5 shipping and buy a new cooling module, and I work as kind of a super tech so I have all the tools and knowledge to replace it. New fridges run about $100, and I need something to cool my beer. Easy fix, good to go. If you can solder, you can fix one of these.

SOURCE: Refrigerator cools, but not cool enough, even with

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Either the start relay and start capacitor or the Adaptive Defrost control is burned out. If you have a voltage meter we can test a few things like the compressor and the capasitor. The part number for the Adaptive defrost is 241508001 and found inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. I can help you locate the problem if you like. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Fridge freezing up

Set your Ref/Freezer per the following:

Refrigerators:
36 to 40 degrees. Ideal temp is 37 Fahrenheit. Note: A temp above 42 degrees promotes bacteria.
Freezer: temp should be -5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal temp is 0 degrees.

You have to wait about 4 hours for everything to stabilize. If you are still having ice forming inside the freeezer then the rubber seal around the door is probably the problem. If they have a split, tear or crack, etc. it will let warm moist house air into the freezer and turn to ice as it cools. If this happens in the refrigerator it'll turn to water and collect in the bottom of the frig. New seals can cost around $60 per door.

If you pack too much food in the unit it may also cause freezing because the air needs to move around in there and food shouldn't block the vents in the back walls of the unit.

Hopefully this helps..

Fridge and freezer at 50 degrees with settings on max cold. I can hear compressor cycling and all power is on. Suggestions?

Your Refrig/freezer should be set as follows:

Refrigerators: 36 to 40 degrees. Ideal temp is 37 Fahrenheit. Note: A temp above 42 degrees promotes bacteria.

Freezer: temp should be -5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal temp is 0 degrees.

Then check the door seals around the edges to see if any splits, tears or cracks have messed up the seal. This will cause your compressor to constantly run as it's trying to cool off the warm house is being sucked into the freezer (or Refrig). A sure sign the door seals are damaged is lots of ice in the freezer door area or water pooling in the bottom area of the refrigerator.

Wait about 4 hrs after you readjusted the Refrigerator/Freezer settings so everything settles down. If you still have problems then the coolant may need to be serviced (topped off) or the motor serviced/checked.

Don't procrastinate because a water heater and Refrig/freezer are the 2 largest energy users in your home- they run 24 hrs a day.

Hope this helps...

Hi my name is veronica my problem of my kenmore elite refrigertor is not cold enought...i want to know what is the tempertaure that need to be on

Problems with Temperature
If the refrigerator or freezer is not cooling properly, check temperature settings and air vents and ensure there is adequate room for proper airflow. Factory-recommended temperature settings are 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius) for the refrigerator; and 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) for the freezer.
If you need to adjust the temperature, do it one degree at a time and wait 24 hours before making additional adjustments. Check the air vents and make sure nothing is blocking them. Finally, if your refrigerator or freezer is too full, there will not be adequate room for air to circulate and cool properly. If these all check out, the problem could be with one or more compressor components and will require professional repair.

Have a nice day : )

I have a GE mdl PSI23SGRCSV side by side. initially the digital temp displays for both freezer and fridge sides went to 16 on freezer side and 43 on fridge side. This happened almost overnight it seemed....

it may be that your fridge is now low on freon the techs now do not know what to do the best thing to do is to call the tech and ask them to test the compressor pressures and see if it is low on charge. unless you know how to take the lower back panel off (the one that is probably cardboard) and feel the lines on the compressor and see if it is really cold and really hot that means that it is cooling properly but if it feels a little warm cominv out of the cooling side and hot on the return side then you need more freon.

I have a B & D BNA17B mini fridge that won't get cold. Can this be 'recharged' like an air-conditioner?

My BNA17B mini fridge also died but it was not the heat sink. I had a blown fuse and two bad power supply filter caps. The fuse is a 3 amp, soldered to the board. I replaced it with a fuse holder and 2.5A fuse. The capacitors are 330uf 250VDC electrolytics. If you replace yours make sure you get the polarity correct. See photo, you can see the bad cap already removed and the replacement on the board.

I am trying to return the freezer and refrugerator settings to 37 and 0 , how do I do that?

There is a dial or button pad inside the fridge that controls the temperature up or down.
some displays are not so clear so just adjust your fridge slowly either way until you get to the desired temperature

37 degree Fahrenheit = 2.78 degree Celsius
0 degree Celsius = 32 degree Fahrenheit

If it's American, the temperature probably reads as fahrenheit. If so, 20 degrees F is 12 degrees F below freezing which converts to only -6.67 degrees Celsius.

Domestic freezers should be set to -17 degrees Celsius (= 0 degrees F), so the beeper is warning you that the freezer compartment is far too warm. If it's working correctly and has the temperature control set correctly, then it should achieve the correct temperature if you leave it for 24 hours and do not open the door nor try to use the ice dispenser. If the freezer is full of unfrozen items and so has to cool those down as well, then it may take even longer to reach the correct operating temperature.

Te operating manual for your appliance will tell you how to set the temperature correctly and whether it's possible to select between fahrenheit and Celsius scales. Most models allow you to set an override on the beep alarm as well. I cannot guide you on this without knowing the exact Samsung model.

Please take a moment to rate my reply.
