I think it's a vertical line, you need to clean the ADF, soft foreign particles/materials might stuck inside the passage of the ADF, this can only be fixed by cleaning, it's not related to anything like, software or driver or glass or lamp, it's only with the adf passage. Follow the instructions here (Click Here), open the link and scroll down to the "Step two : Clean the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)". There's a flash Video Tutorial.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

The scan window for the feeder is seperate from the main scan glass. Look to the left of the scan glass and look for marks or dirt on the smaller feed tray scanning area. Chances are someone put a document with a loose spec of whiteout and its on the feed tray glass.

i also have the same problem, but only when i auto feed. i am thinking there must be a mark on the narrow glass area on the left side as the light source is stationary when auto feeding. I have cleaned the glass but mo change, if you find a soluton please let me know.

When I copy using the auto feed, I get a line across my copies. The line can fade or be dark but has been present for a few months. Copies that are hand placed do not have the line. What can I do?

There is usually a little strip of glass to the left of the main glass bed where you would place paper by hand. This little strip is what the feeder passes the paper over to scan it while the scan head stays in place underneath it. Most likely there is some fuzz or dirt on this strip of glass or on the feeder where the paper passes.

There is something on your scan glass. If you get lines through the document feeder but not on copies made off the glass then it is a dirty scan glass. There is a thin glass strip where the document feeder feeds the original. Usually something like white out that did not dry smears off an original and ends up on this thin strip of glass. Scratch it off with your finger nail and use some glass cleaner to resolve the problem. The scan glass is about 1/2 an inch to an inch wide and will be on the same side of the machine that the copier feeds the originals in on. Once the glass is clean your problem is solved!

Original document fed into top feed tray of mfc 7440N model come out with few thin black lines on the mid left of the scanned file. Scanning file from glass has no issue.

You need to clean the narrow glass strip on the left side of the machine when you open the cover. There is likely lint or something on this glass. This is where the auto document feeder pages are "imaged".

We have a black line down the center of all copies...

If the problem only happens on copies or sent faxes then no it is not your drum. There is something on your scan glass. My guess is you are getting the line on your copies when you run the original through the document feeder. If you get lines through the document feeder but not on copies made off the glass then it is a dirty scan glass. There is a thin glass strip where the document feeder feeds the original. Usually something like white out that did not dry smears off an original and ends up on this thin strip of glass. Black line down center of paper while using manual feed

I had this issue once before on a Canon Multifunction printer and when I talked with Canon they said it was a malfunctioning scanning bed. They sent out a new one and I replaced it and had no further problems.

When printing or faxing from the top tray of my HP OfficeJet 6310 all in one I get a line that runs down the entire page on the copy or fax to the recipient. I have tried cleaning the glass and rollers...

The key to solving this problem lies in what you observed. It only happens when you use the document feeder. As you noted, when you place it on the glass, there is no line.

When you use the feed, your machine does not pull the document onto the main glass to scan it with a moving bar. Instead, the bar parks itself under the roller section, and the document gets scanned as it rolls past the stationary bar. A spot or speck that blocks the light bar as the document rolls past manifests itself as a vertical line.

Lift up the left cover and the roller carriage and you will see a narrow pane of glass about 1-1/2" wide. This is what you clean. I cleaned mine twice, unsuccessfully, with a glass wipe. Then I decided to align the streak on my copy with the glass, and saw the faintest speck. You may have to look VERY VERY hard under a bright light, but it will be there. A third, more vigorous and direct scrub and the speck was gone--so was the streak.

If the vertical line appears in both modes (document-fed and manual) then there is something on the light bar, or the bar has a broken scan pixel. If the main glass were dirty, you would not see a line, but random spots, and then only when fed manually. Dirty feed rollers can make lines, but not usually the clean, precise lines that are created by a blocked scan bar.

HP Officejet J5780 All-in-one Injet prints a grey line down the right side of the page when copying using the automatic document feeder. It does not show up when printing; and it does not show up when...

lift the feed area and look at the small glass plate where the auto feed paper is actually scanned. That needs a good cleaning. Since the paper runs across it even a tiny little obstruction such as paper left from a paper jam or a dot of ink from that pen you used to unstick that last paper jam (maybe its just me??). That one dot turns into a line when the paper rolls across it. Clean well and the line will dissappear.

Dark strip down center of page when coping from tray

There is a small strip of glass on the left side directly under the edge of the scanner, About a half an inch wide. It has something on it.
May be very hard to see, use a strong glass cleaner or some alcohol and a regular piece of paper to clean it with.
