First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. plug it in to the computer normally, it should come up, if it doesn't come up, right click on "my computer" or computer from either the desktop or from the start menu and select manage.

in the management window left side, click on disk management, now on the right, do you see the drive in the disk management?

I accidently formated my external - ekse_3.jpg

You should see a disk 0, 1 or 2 or maybe 3 with size around 480 or more GB make sure it reads Basic, and its online, then if you got unallocated parts like I have on that picture, right click on create new simple volume.

then just click next next next, make sure you check the box "Perform a quick format" or you will be waiting for hours. and change the new volume label to something else, then next next

takes a moment and it should show up on your computer.

let me know

your computer will not match my picture, that was just an example.

open that page again and turn off the drive, then press F5 or click on the refresh button.

then look what dissapeared from the list, then turn it back on and wait 15 seconds or so, and then hit refresh again a few times so the drive will appear back to the list.

Now what came back? is it online? does it say basic? does it say healty or is it unallocated, if its healty, what drive letter does it have? as you can look on that first picture each drive had its letter in (X:) if your drive doesn't have a letter then just right click on it and select change drive letter. if there is no existing letter just click add and thats it.

I have a Maxtor onetouch 4. I want to use it as an external hard drive. Windows explorer recognizes it but when I try to copy files to it, it says the drive is write protected. I down loaded the Maxtor...

That's because the software it comes with unlocks the drive to do backups. You should be able to format the drive in windows and then it should work fine for your purposes.
Right Click the Drive, Select Format, give it a volume name if you want and select quick format. Leave everything else default.

Connected 20V laptop power supply to 1touch4 by accident. Now with its own 12v pwr supply connected, it just flashes and HD does not spin up. Pulled it apart and nothing obviously fried. Any suggestions?

The electronics has been damaged and the cost of repair may be high even if you can find an electronic repairer.
I suggest you put your money towards a new USB hard drive as 1Tb hard drives are less than $100.

My Maxtor One Touch can not be accessed. My computer just lost any Maxtor software.

SEATOOLS should be able to help. Give that a try first!

You shouldn't need the management software, but if you do, you can call seagate and get the maxtor software again if you need it.

I have the Maxtor OneTouch 4 (750GB) external drive. Somehow I've lost my software that came with this drive. How can I purchase just the disc I need?

No need to purchase the software, it's available free from the Seagate website. Seagate recently bought out/merged with Maxtor and has taken over support. Got to:

Ckick on Maxtor External Drives then click on One Touch 4 Family.

Click on download Software link below the name of the version you have One Touch 4/Mini/Plus and the software will download. You can just install it or you can save a copy to burn to disk and then intall from the saved copy.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

I restored my computer and i saved all my data in my one touch 4 mini hard drive. Now my computer wont read one touch 4 mini 250gb. can some one please help me i lost everything?

No, you haven't lost anything. When you restored your software, you only restored the factory stuff. You'll need to reinstall the driver for the external hard drive. After you do that, your external drive and data should be accessible.

When I purchased the Maxtor oneTouch 4 Plus for my Mac, they sent it to me without disk and manual. It does work, but I have some questions. What is that light on the side of the unit... when I press on...

the light is an instant backup button, you need to have the maxtor softwre installed, but when set up correctly the hard drive will create an updated backup of your mac's hd whenever the button is pressed.

Hope this helped.
