Question about Admiral AW22 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Admiral AW20N35V Washer started making a loud grinding noise during the agitation cycle.I've looked for obvious breaks/wear but nothing to note. I then pulled the washer into the garage, filled the tub and tried the agitation cycle again; no more noise to note. Knowing that issues don't go away for good, I'm trying to get the gear box out; good or bad idea? Looks like I may need some special tools also? Thanks in advance for your help. Orlando T

Forgot to mention, are there disassembly instructions available and what's the most probable cause?

  • UnHombre Jun 15, 2008

None, but I'm some what mechanically inclined. I also figure, the system is breaking down, a repair tech is going to charge almost what it'd cost to replace, so why not?

P.S. $10 for you to tell me not to try?

  • UnHombre Jun 15, 2008

The standard comment that's been previously posted is not the same disassembly for my model. My transmission uses bolts not tabs.

  • UnHombre Jun 15, 2008

Yes, please send disassembly instructions for my model, not generic instructions for general models. Also, would like to get a parts break down indicating which the likely failed part. In addition, a listing of what other parts/gaskets that should be replaced when performing this level of maintenance.

If you begin dissassembly from the tub down, you wil come to the transmission with the spindle sticking out of it. If you undo the bendable tabs all around the transmission it comes apart in two halves. Careful, its full of oil. The spindle has a plastic gear bolted to the bottom of it. It meshes with other gears in the tranny. It has sheered teath and is making the noise

I have a Admiral Capacity Plus washer LNC6267B71. Washer makes loud grinding noise when agitating & spin cycles. Machine does fill, drain, agitate & spin. Only noise is concern.

Hello. Your symptom describes damaged bearings and/or a damaged transmission. This is a MAJOR, INVOLVED repair requiring special tools to prevent serious injury during dis-assembly and re-assembly. I strongly suggest acquiring outside service to repair this machine if cost effective. There are many parts that have to be removed and then replaced--if you've never done this--don't attempt it. There is a brake spring with 200lbs of torque on it that has to have a special tool mounted to relieve the tension during removal and then re-compress it during replacement for example. Sorry to be so dramatic but I don't want you to get hurt needlessly. I hope I helped you!

Whirlpool Model #: WTW4800XQ making a loud grinding noise during or at end of spin cycle. Help!

I have a similar model (WTW4850XQ1) that was making a very loud grinding/screeching noise during the agitation and sometimes the spin cycle. I unplugged and turned it on its front to get underneath and exposed the motor/transmission unit. Took the cover off the belt drive assembly and my drive gear was loose. Simple tightening down of the nut was an easy fix for me. But some times those plastic gears between the drive pulley assembly and transmission crack or the teeth wear down (think it's called the CAM). That is a fairly cheap and easy fix as well ($35). Repair Clinic website has free videos on how to diagnose and fix issues and parts as well. Worth a look.

Load squeal when it in the agitation cycle.

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

My Capacity Plus Admiral Washer will spin and agitate, but it makes a loud grinding noise.

Well, Sounds to me like the Bearings are going out, but it could make that noise a good while, before it goes completely out.. Replacement would possably be more cost effective, Kinda hard to beleive !!!!!!
