Hi

Clean your XP disc first before installing it and if that doesn't work, get another XP install disc that one has a corrupt file that cant be read.

Unplug all devices except the hard drive and 1 cd/dvd rom drive. disable the audio device and any other unnecessary devices within the BIOS and remove all pci cards. remove all but 1 ram stick, and try using different ram sticks, one at a time, while trying to boot. if it boots, with 1 ram stick, 1 hard drive and 1 dvd/cd drive then try adding/reenabling the other devices one at a time, until you find the device that keeps it from booting.

if your pc wont load with just a hard drive, cd rom and 1 stick of ram, then it is prolly trashed. if removing/disabling one of the other devices (such as the sound card or the modem card) allows it to boot, then you have found what needs replaced.

My hard drive stopped working.

Hi,
I see your hard drive stopped working, any errors on the Hard drive when trying to turn the system on? do you get a blue screen? or just a black screen when the system is turned on?
Try going into safe mode, turn the computer ON then keep on tapping F8 to get the options menu select safe mode see if windows will boot p from there then you can back up any files you need and most likely reinstalling windows will be best to avoid the problem from happening again.
Also reinstalling windows will give you more details if the hard drive the the one that caused it to top or a different device.
If reinstalling stops and gives you a blue screen then most probably the hard drive is faulty or shall I say not anymore bootable, but if it works on safemode then you can try reinstalling windows see if windows installs then great, but if it result to a blue screen you will have to find out what is causing that...
this can be a faulty RAM on the system or a faulty Video Card if your video card is an expansion video card not a built in video card.
Also if you hear a clicking noise from the Hard Drevie then the problem is the HDD itself and needs replacing.

Hi,

First off, we need to know what the blue screen error says. You need to get the first set of "technical info" that looks like e.g. 0x000007e. To get this, Tap f8 when booting your computer and on the boot options menu, choose "disable automatic restart on system failure" this should allow the blue screen to stay on your screen and you should be able to copy the information we need to troubleshoot your bluescreen error.

Post your details here so we can continue.

thanks for using Fixya.

Plugged it in and the computer states there was a problem and will not recognize it have XP operating system Firelite 250 gb 5400 rpm

If the hard drive that you're installing has an operating system on it already, like Windows XP, you can't just move the hard drive from machine to machine if the computers are different. When you install Windows (or most other operating systems), the operating system customizes itself to the hardware in the computer. If you pull that hard drive out and install it on a completely different computer, Windows will most likely fail to boot and give errors and blue screens. This is normal. You will need to reinstall or repair the operating system if you want to keep the new hard drive in the machine.

Blue screen in xp & system shuts down

Friend,
It is an indication that Windows is about to crash. You must do the following immediately:
1. Back up all your data if possible to a different drive. Or at least out of C:\Windows folder where MY Computer resides.
2. Go to www.ccleaner.com. And download CCleaner, the registry cleaner. What happens is that all programs registry themselves with Windows Registry. When yo uninstall the some do remove their traces from the registry, most do not. And the registry keeps bloating. This not only slows down the PC but also can cause a crash when a lot of junk is there. So use this CCleaner and remove all the junk from the registry. And you may not have to reinstall Windows. And if you have to then you have to and are prepared for it by having taken a backup of your data.

UNMOUNTABLE______BOOT_____VOLUME ***Stop: 0 X

It could be a problem with the harddrive and memories ,if you enter the DELL bios setup page when the computer starts up does it have an option to test the hard drive if so test it.
Also if you have two memory sticks then try with only one and vice versa.

Try booting with another boot CD like the ultimate boot CD it has some hard drive testing tools too.

Good Luck

Emachines 180 desktop reinstalling windows xp

Your trying to reinstall Windows XP from cd on your emahcine computer and from what I understand part of the way through the installation of XP you recieve a blue screen? Am I correct?
If so then their can be a couple of things wrong here.
One your cd drive is not reading the cd correctly try cleaning the lense on your cd drive or change the drive and use a different drive. Second your Windows XP cd is bad, screatched or smudged. Try cleaning your cd or make a copy of it on a friends machine and use the new one. If you tried all of these and you are still getting the blue screen repost for more help.

Thanks

Can't reload windows xp. Keeps shutting down???? Acer 2700 Laptop

this happens when you have errors with the hard drive not responding to the new boot or drivers not responding. is this a clean install or a restore? if you are not using the original xp disk the machine came with you may get these errors. the blue screen usually has a message in it. let me know what it says if you get a second.

Shuts off at boot up screen?

Start the computer in safe mode (tap F8 immediately after turning it on until you see the option of how to boot)

If it successfully boots into windows, you have an issue with either driver conflicts and/or viruses. If it still restarts itself, you most likely have a hardware issue (bad hard drive, motherboard, etc)
