Question about Yamaha WX5 Midi Wind Controller

1 Answer

I can't get my Yamaha WX5 to sustain, or play more than one note. I got it to do it long ago by accident, but can't seem to get it to do it again. I think I was using a Yamaha Keyboard for the sounds at the time. I've read the manual but, I still can't get it work. I'm currently using the VL70-m tone generator.

Reread your manual pages 14 and 15. Note page 14 tells you that "When using a monophonic tone generator such as the VL70m, the Normal Hold and Follow Hold functions CANNOT be used." I have both the WX5 and WX7. I also have both the VL70m and the WT11. The VL70m has a lot of better sounds, is editable and has better effects the WT11 allows you to use both follow modes. Any polyphonic midi keyboard with a midi in jack will allow you to use the follow modes. Read the directions on page 9 of your WX5 manual to hook your WX5 to the keyboard. Set your keyboard to receive all midi channels. I think it is Omni On, Poly. Hope this helps.

Sustain Pedal works intermittently.

To start with always best to use the correct power supply these should be readily available from any good Yamaha store. Is the sustain pedal a Yamaha pedal? The plug end of the pedal connect a multimeter across the two connectors and set meter to show continuity. If there is no continuity press pedal, hopefully this will now respond. If not then the break is in the pedal. If meter idea works then it could be the socket on the keyboard, these can work loose on the pcb they are mounted to if they are used a lot.

You could open up the keyboard and look inside checking the solder joints on the socket or simply take to a Yamaha service centre.

You could also try a master reset of the keyboard, hold down the highest note whilst turning on, this will reset to factory default.

Let me know how you get on.

P90 sustain sound won't stop some times when am playing

Check and see if there is a switch on the foot pedal. Check the P-90 menu under footswitch to make sure it is set to sustain.

With no octave keys pressed the wx5 is playing an octave too low

Please have a look at the instruction manual again. The 8ve keys are assignable/editable for up or down. You can change the range of the scale this way. I own a WX7 and a WX5. They both work this way.

Fc4 sustain pedal is in "sustain" mode at all times -- it won't release the sustained notes. I tried plugging the pedal in (to a roland ep-9) before powering up and had the same problem.

Sorry, but the Yamaha pedal has the opposite sense (it is a normally open contact) than what is REQUIRED by Roland equipment. Roland requires a Normally Closed contact. Unfortunately, one is confused because the Roland jack for the sustain shorts itself to no sustain when you unplug a pedal. SOMETIMES one can open a pedal and with soldering iron change a wire to reverse the pedal sense IF the particular pedal has both contacts available.

A bought an Yamaha DGX 640 grand a week before and the note sustain for a longer duration and overlaps with the current playing notes. I checked the sustain in the function setting and it is also showing ...

The function setting is for the PANEL sustain (Page 68 of your manual)

The other method of sustain is by footswitch or pedal option. See page 13.

If you use a footswitch, it needs to be a normally open contact type. If you plug a Roland type in, it is opposite polarity and will sustain UNLESS the pedal is pressed. Make sure nothing else is plugged in the sustain jack... headphones that are inadvertently plugged in there would sustain.

My P85 digital piano have not a good trasmission with midi cable USB, in particular when press the sustain pedal trasmit a note to pc. Thanks

It is IMPORTANT to realize that the SUSTAIN is NOT attached to a note, but is an independent MIDI message. Hence it is up to the external MIDI device to associate the sustain with whatever notes are still active.

Hi. I'm Using PX330 as a midi controller that plays "Galaxy pianos" in cubase 5. I'm interested in buying a continuous sustain pedal (the one I got with the piano is an On\Off pedal). can you...

The Yamaha FC-3 uses a TRS (three conductor plug). The PX330 does NOT use TRS jacks for the sustain and sostenuto pedals so they are NOT compatible with the Yamaha FC-3. Therefore I would conclude that continous sustain that the Yamaha pedal would be used for is NOT supported.

Yamaha wx5 out of tune (1 tone to low) and pitch bend wheel working up but not down...

As an electrical engineer, I suspect that one end of the resistance element or the voltage supplied to it is broken. This could be a broken circuit trace on a board or failure of the pitch wheel pot. This is iff the device has a center tapped pot. IF IT DOESN"T (schematics are hard to find on this) then the bias setting for the pitch wheel may be wrong. First thing would be to look if the the wheel has slipped on the control shaft.
