It sounds like there is a problem with the magnetron or its drive. Check magnetron only by substitution and the diode/capacitor with a moving coil meter on the high Ohms range.
BEWARE DANGEROUS VOLTAGES ARE AT THESE POINTS ensure the capacitor is fully discharged BEFORE ANY EXAMINATION IS ATTEMPTED!
Hope this helps.

What would cause the glass tray in the microwave to shatter

  • The glass tray had a hairline crack or stress fracture that was not visible
  • It got a little too hot in one area
  • The expansion from the heat caused the fracture to expand and therefore crack and break
An accidental bumping of the microwave plate on the countertop while going from the microwave to the dishwasher might set up the above situation. The spoon your seven year old left in the mac and cheese might have arced and nicked a small piece of the glass. Whatever the cause, microwave trays break and they break for a lot of reasons.

All foods cooked in the microwave produce heat. Microwaves themselves are not hot, but the foods cooked in a microwave get hot - some much hotter than others.
Even though most microwave glass trays are tempered, they are not designed to hold up under high temperatures. You will see most microwave trays stamped with the words "For microwave oven use only" This is to let us know that it's probably not a good idea to use the trays in a conventional oven.
Any air pockets, cracks or gaps in the glass can enlarge under heat. Since glass isn't very receptive to being stretched, breakage can occur.

Microwave worked this morning and now not.....made no noise just stopped heating.

HELLO.

The solution is to diagnose the magnetron as explained below.

* 1 Fill a mug with room temperature water from your kitchen sink.

* 2 Place the mug of water on the glass cooking plate inside the microwave.

* 3 Set the microwave on "High" for one minute and press "Start." You should hear the magnetron hum while it is working.

* 4 Remove the mug carefully from the oven by its handle. The magnetron is working properly if the water is hot or warm. The next step repair or a replacement of magnetron if the water is still cold.

Thanks.

Kenmore 64664300 microwave. 6 years in service. Heated cup of water very hot in 1.45 min. Next use only warmed the cup of water. Would not pop corn as before. Installed new OE...

Timing a known quantity of water to boiling is probably the best way to make routine comparative checks on the efficiency of a microwave.

You have done more than most folk would do and have done almost all an ordinary handyman can do. Microwaves are now so inexpensive it is hardly worth repairing them now.

Probably the new magnetron is short of drive. There could be a problem with the supply to the transformer, the transformer, the rectifier or the capacitor.

There is a limit to how many multimeter tests can be done with a dead circuit before the voltages must be checked while it is operating.

The transformer has two outputs, one low voltage for the magnetron heater and one high voltage to drive the magnetron. The high voltage output CANNOT be checked with a normal multimeter!
The maximum range of a normal multimeter is likely to be 600 volts or maybe even 1 kv but the transformer output should be at least 2800 volts and could be as high as 3500 volts.

A special voltmeter for measuring high voltages would be prohibitively expensive and even an eht probe to convert an ordinary meter is painfully expensive.

Our new microwave heats the containers but not the food. Container is too hot to touch. Food "looks" hot, usually boiling - but food isn't even warm.

Check on the material the containers are made of. If they are not microwave friendly then they will cause problems.
Some materials are designed to "Roast" the contents by absorbing the energy.
Check with a Pyrex glass container and water. The glass should stay fairly cool.

I've an old Rowenta yoghurt-round with glass jars- maker and would like instructions for using it, please!

Mix 1 plain yoghurt with 1 liter UHT milk at room temperature. Fill the jars with this mix and cover them. Place the jars in the Yoghurt maker and close it with the cover. Turn the knob to 5 or 7 (it depends on the texture you like in the yoghurt) and you are all set. If you heat up the milk above 45 Celsius, turn the knob to 2 or 3.

Put a hot pocket in for 3 min and it doesnt even

the unit inside the microwave that heats called the "magnetron" has gone bad or the circuits that power the magnetron have failed. if its under warranty still, send it back to the manufacturer. if not you can call some repair shops and see how much it would be to service it, but its most likely going to be cheaper to purchace a new microwave since they are relatively cheap these days

I tried to reheat food and didn't get any results. Could I have ruined it by turning it on without food?

well if you keep on running your microwave without any thing in it then yes! it burns out the magnatron
(thats the bit the heat come from) and when there burned out its a dust bin jod as there very pricy to by and its not a smart thing to do trying to fit a new one by yourself,, you stand a very good chance of just killing yourself first,,to test your microwave opn the door put inside a cup of cold water and turn on the microwave for 3 mins on full power, the water should be boiling by then,,,dont put anything in the hot water like milk or it could explode in your face! just tip it away

JVM1540DN1WW leaves food cold

Put in one cup of water at 2 1/2 minutes on high -- it should boil.

The fan slowing down is normal becaue the magnetron, which does the heating and, which pulls about 10 amps, will drop the voltage across the fan and slow it down.

What type of circuit was your old microwave using? Was it a circuit dedicated to the microwave?
