Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My fridge is an E442BRE fisher & paykel, fridge on top and freezer on the bottom. The alarm keeps going off everytime I open the door, and it sounds like there is an internal alarm going off as well. The display when I open the door alternates between red & green flashing, until I press the button to reset it. Your help would be much appreciated.c

Hi Duane - I'd already looked on the website which I why I posted on here - It's not really professional advice to say you looked on the website! Anyone can do that! I called fisher & paykel & they wouldn't give any direction as to what the issue was, or if any other people had had the issue, they only said that I would need a technician to look at it. I can't go on resetting it as it happens every time I open the door - very frustrating.

The fridge is now getting warmer as well, but the freezer is still fine... Do you have any advice as to what may be wrong (ie does it need re-gassing, cleaning?) or is the website the best you've got?

    Cheers - Cat

Can anyone else help with this, not really happy with Duane's advice to ring the company (Which I have already done), after he had searched the webiste (which I had also done). I wouldn't consider that advice to be from an "expert".

I am wanting to know if anyone has an idea about what is actually wrong with the fridge so that I don't get ripped off when I do get it fixed. The fridge is 9 years old, model already given in initial description. If you need any further information please let me know...

Thanks Duane - that's great! Exactly what I was looking for... Cheers - Cat

If resetting the refrigerator repeatedly is undesireable, then I would see what the alarm is for.

I checked the website for fisher & paykel and they have a nice lineup of refrigerators.

However, when I tried to look up the red and green flashing light problem in their online manuals, it didn't refer to that problem.

I would try to contact the company directly at the following link: to see what could be done

Good luck on this repair.

I'm sorry, but I had to look at their website to see if there was any information available to the public through the computer to fix the problem that was described.

I never heard of this company before, that's why I started there.

Also, I didn't go as far as you did by contacting them, but am a little disappointed that they didn't have a solution for you.

If the freezer is cold but the refrigerator side is getting warmer, there is probably ice building up inside the back compartment area where the cooling coils or evaporator coils are located along with the defrost heating element.

It sounds like it is not cycling through the defrost cycle very well.

In the old days, refrigerators were manually defrosted. You can do this by unplugging it and removing all food that is perishable from the refrigerator for about 24 hours and then replugging it in.

Do you see water accumulating in the pan down below the refrigerator where the defrost cycle causes water to collect? If you don't, this a telltale sign that the refrigerator is malfunctioning, either through a timer that is bad or the computer is not going through normal defrost cycles.

Warranties on refrigerators are generally no longer than 1 year. I know this because we just bought a new Amana refrigerator from Sears for about $1200 to replace a refrigerator we had since 1978 made by Frigidaire.

Even, the high tech large stylish refrigerators have this short of a warranty, even though one would expect the refrigerator to last longer than that.

In addition, if the ice buildup has expanded and destroyed the heating element, it could be related to the reset problem where it is not resetting and staying operational. Also, if the internal air passages that are supposed to be a certain dimension or size are cracked or the fan doesn't circulate cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator side, you're going to have nothing but problems.

I've heard of some people who had refrigerators that had this kind of damage and the recommendation of the technician was to scrap it and get a new refrigerator.

For example, there was one post on fixya.com that said that someone got a GE Profile Refrigerator for $7,000 to $8,000 and had several service calls to repair, and the techs got so frustrated with the 'warm' refrigerator that they recommended a new one for that price.

The rational behind that was supposedly that the repair costs would equal the cost of a new one and they couldn't guarantee that the problem would not happen again, because there was damage to the refrigerator which was not repairable by a tech.

Obviously, the owner of the refrigerator was angry and frustrated over that opinion because he didn't want to spend another $7,000 to $8,000 for a refrigerator.

In my experience as a landlord with 14 properties, we have encountered numerous similar problems such as yours with refrigerators not cooling properly due to malfunctioning electrical or electronic parts.

The newer refrigerators are very reliable, and are more economical to run than their predecessors.

Fisher Paykel RF175WDRX1. Why does the fridge beep when I open it?

check the thermostat setting for the compartment
it may not be set low enough so the alarm goes off when the compartment temperature reaches or exceeds that setting
some fridges have a system whereby if the door is open too long then it notifies the user to close the door

I have a fisher & paykel active smart fridge the fridge part freezes everything and wont stop beeping when door open

Your fridge is telling you there is a fault, i'd say one of the 2 fans are not working. If everything is freezing in the bottom of the food compartment then the upper fan is faulty. You have to remove the shelves & remove the rear panel, the fan is in the shute at the bottom, remove, repair the broken wire or replace. Make sure unit is unpluged.

Fisher and Paykel Freezer

Very possible the door was accidently left open for a period of time. When that happens, moisture latches on to different areas which inturn creates ice build up. In short, do a good defrost and then restart freezer again.

Uneven cooling in fridge and annooying alarm every 10 hours!

Hi,

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.

thanks,
