Transfer/Edit Sony HDR-TG3 1080i AVCHD Videos on Windows/Mac

Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E is a super small camera with full HD recording on Memory Stick in 2008. It includes 4GB and 10x optical zoom for capturing 1920x1080 and 1440x1080 videos. However, this camera does not include progressive recording mode, which indicates that the HD videos are 1080i. Even though it is compact camera, the audio is recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1ch. You can also take 2.3Mp stills while you are recording video footage.
Sony HDR-TG3E features:
- 1920x1080i HD video recording
- 4 megapixel still photo recording
- Dual Rec simultaneous 2.3 megapixel still photo during video recording
- Handy face detection
- Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens
- ClearVid CMOS Sensor and Exmor derived technology
Videos from Sony HDR-TG3E:
Movie Format:
- High Definition: AVCHD (1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080) in .mts filename extension
- Standard Definition: MPEG2 in .mpg filename extension
Movie Quality:
- HD: FH (1920x1080i, 16Mbps) / HQ (9Mbps) / SP (7Mbps) / LP (5Mbps)
- SD: HQ (9Mbps) / SP (6Mbps) / LP (3Mbps)

Transfer & Edit Sony HDR-TG3 AVCHD videos:
For Windows users:
Install the Picture Motion Browser (PMB) from the bundled CD in box, and connect Sony HDR TG3 to PC via USB cable. Use Sony PMB to download HD .mts videos from camcorder to PC.
For Mac users:
You can capture and transfer Sony HDR-TG3 1080i videos to iMac/MacBook Pro via iMovie after connecting camera to computer with USB cable. However, you may face problem when trying to log and transfer AVCHD videos from Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E to Final Cut Express (FCE) 4 or Final Cut Pro (FCP) 5. After transferring HD .mts videos from camera to computer hard drive, just run Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac as the Mac Sony HDR-TG3 MTS converter to deinterlace .mts videos and convert .mts to .mov for FCE and FCP, if you want to edit HD videos.
Alternative way to transfer HDR TG3 videos for Mac and PC:
Just connect HDR TG3 pocket camera to computer via the USB cable, and the HDR TG3 will display as a hard drive on computer. Navigate to the HDR TG3 hard drive to access the memory stick.
Tips: Sony Handycam HDR-TG3E is the model for Europe, and Sony Handycam HDR-TG1 is the model for US.

We have Handycam HDR-HC3. Our old PC worked well importing videos, but eventually died, and we upgraded, but didn't check new pc didn't have Firewire. We have a spare Vista PC which has Firewire socket,...

I searched under HDR-HC3 firewire driver and got the above link.

It says the following:

Hi..

The problem was a missing MSDV.SYS file.

Thanks
D.

Actually, on the Sony site it says that no additional drivers are required to connect the camera in Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

But, the user of this camera and firewire noted that he was having trouble convincing windows of this.

Another link that talks about the firewire problem follows:

You can find more links by searching under 'HDR-HC3 firewire driver' or related searches to find the solution to your problem.

I hope this helps.

Please help me ... how can i transfer videos from my Sony HDR-FX1000E Camcorder tape to save it into my laptop (SonyVPCEB1M1E)? i will be waiting to hear from you... thanks a lot.

Transferring video from your FX1000E should be quite simple using an HDMI cable. If you've recorded in HD, the files may be quite large, so make sure there's enough space on your HD to accommodate them or the transfer will error out (which might be the problem you're experiencing). Once transferred, the most recent version of Windows Media Player should be able to play them. You may want to convert them to MP4 files to save some space too. If space is an issue, think about getting a 1TB external hard drive to transfer them to. You can then plug both the FX1000E into your laptop and the external drive into your laptop at the same time and when capturing the footage save it directly to the external drive.

Yes I think this is the camera that records on the mini tapes yes? I have heard of this problem, and it is mostly dust, fluff round the capstan drives, if you clean the camera heads with a tape cleaner cass it should be okay.

I have a High Definition Sony Handycam - HDR-HC5. I am currently having major problems trying to use my firewire "i-link" cable to download the holiday tape onto my pc for editing. Each time the...

Go to manufacture's website. Find the download or support tab. Then look for the very latest drivers for your camera. Then download onto pc, double-click to extract and install the driver, then restart pc, Then turn on camera first, then start any programs you are using, then finally connect with usb/i-link/HD cable.

When pc doesn't recognize a device, it is due to the driver.

Connection to PC does not work

Hello, yes I am aware of that problem. Basically one should change the so called VC441 Board. Luckily PAL version has almost twice cheaper VC441 board then the US version. For my account about 300 Euro. So, in order to repair the camcorder above mentioned board has to be replaced. If you need more info please advice.
