i really don't think that's the issue here... tried several comps - didn't work. the computer is making that funny noise once i turn it on - meaning it recognizes it, but i can't see it on my computer.
the hard drive's "engine" sounds like it starts running - an escalating noise - and then after a few seconds it stops and sort of restarts itself, and again and again. as said, nothing shows on the computer. do you still want me to try the Y usb cable? i don't think that's the issue...

    ???

The description reminds me of what happened to a 'new' hard disk drive that I bought from Seagate at a computer show in the 1990s. If the drive doesn't boot, it's probably not functional due to a board problem on the drive.

I would say that if you have recently purchased the drive, to return or exchange it for another.
If it is not possible to do this because the 30 day time limit has been exceeded, try to contact the manufacturer to see if there is a longer warranty.

Seagate drives, for example, carry a 5 year warranty, typically.

I have had to replace drives before, with that company, and they were very accomodating.

Good luck on repairing or replacing this drive.

The power issue is probably due to a board problem, like a capacitor that bled out, or an Integrated Circuit that blew. Probably it's a manufacturing defect.

I've seen this particular drive on sale for like $86 or so on the Internet from discount mail order retailers.

So, it's 5 years old, not new. I'm sorry but if you don't have a back up of your files, on another drive or tape, then it may be irretrievable.

The only other option is to maybe send the unit in for out of warranty repair, but in my experience, even with Seagate, a leading hard drive manufacturer, they don't really get into board repair but simply replace drives with new ones.

I think that in the instructions they would say that making backups of your data, even if it's an online Internet backup, that this is recommended for consumer as well as professional grade hard drives.

Cavalry isn't one of the bigger names, but I think they would probably have a similar policy on repair and replacement as Seagate or Western Digital.

Where did you buy the drive?

The problem is that the USB power is insufficient for your harddrive drive. Try connecting it to another computer and also try connecting it to another USB port. Sometimes you will need to connect it to two USB ports using the "2-USB" cable. The USB Y-cable for a dual-power connection are sold at Best Buy for under $5. Make sure it matches your hard drive's connector

The tv shuts off by itself. I will turn it on..and after awhile, it just turns off by itself, and then after about a minute I can turn it on again and watch tv for awhile, and then it will do it again.

It seems that your unit has some sort of PSU fault, or a problem that is shutting down the Power Supply Unit, PSU. This happens so that no further damage, and possible fire will occur. The faulty component(s) are heating up, tripping the fault control, and shutting down, it cools down again, and will restart, then the process repeats, it will eventually fail fully.
You need to take the unit to a reputable service centre/man and ask for a firm "Quote" for the work to be done. It is that sound that gives it away, this is a typical switchmode Power Supply problem.

After it shuts down and the faulty component(s) cool down, it restarts again until it once again goes critical and shuts down again only to repeat the cyle.
