Question about HP Photosmart 2710 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Black Ink Cartridge alignment problem

Black was printing light, so replaced cartridge. Replaced black cartridge twice. Same problem each time, but seems to be getting worse. Now, alignment fails on both new cartridges. Now, prints no black, but color is fine. Also error "Every error". Uh oh!! Taking both cartridges out to look around and see if I can see anything obvious wrong, under cartridges, there seems to be what was once white felt. It is soaked with black ink. And, under the color cartridge, there seems to be a small piece of the felt (about 1/2" long x 1/4" wide) has lifted up that wants to wrap around the horizontal black plastic bar that runs below the cartridges. There is also a lot of black ink on the horizontal plastic bar. All cartridges are 'Genuine HP'. Any ideas??

Could be, but this is with 3 cartridges: original, and 2 that I have put in (new) to help troubleshoot. I'm not too worried about ink if it really is no problem, but I wonder if it is a symptom. The real problem is that alignment fails, and black on all 3 cartridges does not print. Color prints ok. Is there something about the printer that could cause the cartridges (all 3) to leak? Thanks.

We have a solution, kinda, we think, we hope. I investigated further. The small piece of felt turned out to be a big piece of felt like absorbent material. I think it is put on the bottom to absorb ink if it leaks. Ours leaked. This sort of expanded this material and seemed to interfere with the horizontal rod/gear setup just below the cartridges. We tried to remove the material in one piece, but could not do it without disassembling the whole chassis. So, we were able to get it out, but not without really destroying the stuff. (There is a hold down post that isn't accessible, so we just had to finally pull around the post.) We tried to just reinsert the cartridges, and it aligned them and started working, much to our surprise. We really didn't expect it to work, but it is the only suspicious physical problem we could see. We will look for some absorbent material to place on the floor of the printer in case we have another cartridge that leaks. We will start surveying the printer marked in case our fix was not really a fix but luck. But, right now, the printer is working. We're happy campers!

Sounds like a cartridge leak. You can clean it up pretty easily with mild soap and water.

Make sure you turn it off when you do it.

Check to make sure there is no ink on the contacts of the black cartridge as well as the ribbon connector the connects to it in the carriage.

I have never heard of that happen before. I know if they have been refilled they lose there effectiveness causing leaks to happen.

Usually the felt is used to purge the cartridges. I bet it was so full of ink that it expanded causing the cartridge not to print.

You might want to see if you can replace it asap. It will purge them eventually.

I have an HP DeskJet 1220C that has been working fine for two years now. All of a sudden it can only print in pink and black. It is driving me crazy. I have tried the following without any success:

1. Replaced the cartridges twice
2. Aligned and cleaned the cartridge from the
computer
3. Soaked the cartridge head in hot water,
and made sure that all three colors will bleed
out of the head
4. Cleaned the cartridge contacts with an eraser
5. Cleaned the cartridge contacts on the printer
with a brush

Is there a cure, or is it time for a new printer?

My printer isn't printing from the black ink cartridge -only color. I've replaced the black ink cartridge twice, so I know it isn't the cartridge.

Run a few "print-head-cleaning-cycles", to UNCLOG the ink-jets that should be spraying the black ink onto the paper.

I have a Kodak printer ESP5250. I have replaced the black ink cartridge, done a printer head alignment, and cleaned the printer heads. When I print a black and white printout I only get the outline, the...

Did you replaced the cartridge because of this issue or because it was depleted?

Since Kodak cartridges have the Print head attached to each cartridge it may be that the cartridge it malfunctioning.

To Test use a lightly damped paper towel and put the cartridge or print head where the ink comes out in top of the paper towel if ink start flowinf to the paper towel then the cartridge is fine, otherwise try to exchange that cartridge for a new one.

I have just changed my black ink cartridge however still patchy

Typically you do not have to change the color cartridge when you replace the black cartridge.
As far as the spotty printing, it sounds like you have some clogged nozzles caused by the lower quality of ink in refilled or aftermarket cartridges. There cartridge inks may not be up to specification. This is especially true for the ultra fine printers.
To clear the problem you need to insert an OEM cartridge, run the deep nozzle cleaning utiliity at least twice followed by the alignment utility. This should clear up the problem with the spotty and washed out printout.
Let me know if this solves your problem otherwise we can explore other solutiions. For the record, which printer do you have?
Please rate this solution. Thanks.

Test page printing at the time of printer powered on

s.gif Solution minimtop.gif The product aligns the print cartridges every time that print cartridges are installed or replaced to ensure the highest-quality prints. The alignment page will continue to print every time that the product is turned on or off until the alignment process is completed. NOTE: If you remove and install the same print cartridge, the unit will NOT align the print cartridges. The unit remembers the alignment values for that print cartridge, so you do not need to realign the print cartridges. Follow the steps below, in the order presented, to correctly complete a print cartridge alignment. s.gif Step one: Remove the print cartridges minimtop.gif
  1. If the On/Resume button is not lit, press the On/Resume button to turn the product on. Figure 1: Press the On/Resume button to turn the product on c00316907.gif
  2. Make sure the paper tray is down and there is letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the paper tray.
  3. Lower the access door until it stops. Figure 2: Lower the access door c00316908.gif Make sure the print carriage moves to the center. Figure 3: Print carriage in the center of the printer c00316909.gif
  4. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then, using your thumb, lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. Figure 4: The print carriage c00316910.gif

s.gif Step two: Install the new print cartridge minimtop.gif
  1. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape by using the pink pull tab. 2. Slide the new print cartridge forward at a slight upward angle into the empty slot. Using your index finger, push the print cartridge forward until it clicks into place. Figure 7: Insert the print cartridge c00316911.gif

Ink cartridge light keeps blinking

you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.

HP Photosmart C3100 series

I just got off the HP help line.  After changing my black ink cartridge a test page was printing each time I turned the machine on.  This is very costly, in both time and ink as the cartridges themselves for this machine hold very little ink.  I tried to learn from HP tech how to turn off the test-print while keeping my color cartridge empty.  It turns out that you cant do it.  HP requires you to keep buying and using cartridges whether you need them or not.If you buy the color ink it will use it up in its testings.  And if you dont buy the color cartridge it will use up your black ink by printing the test each time you turn on the printer.  The printer was inexpensive sure, but I'm paying for it in wasted ink.
