Go to "My Computer" Right click and select "manage devices" Go to "drive manager" and you should see a list of drives (C: D: etc.) You may be prompted right away to "initialize" a new hard drive. You may have to do that to this drive for it to work. DO NOT format the drive if prompted. that will destroy any and all data on the drive. Once it is initialized for your computer; it should generate a new drive letter. If it doesn't, you can right click the bar; and give it a drive letter. See photo for example: My WD My Book 500gb is connected, light is on, it - jdavies255_1.png

I've got XP, so your instructions aren't working... but I can get to Device Manager through My Computer properties, but when I right click on the drive, the options are Update Driver, Disable, Uninstall, Scan for Hardware Changes, and Properties. Under properties-general, device status is "working properly" however, under properties-volumes, everything is blank and when I click populate, the status is "unreadable" capacity 0% - that sounds bad. I found Computer Management (looks like the screen you put up), and the drive shows in the Device Manager list but DOES NOT show in the Disk Management list. This is not a good sign, is it?

Since you have xp; right click "my computer" and choose "manage" then, you will see a disk management screen (it's fairly similar) .

Was there data on this drive prior? (You can try to format the drive) to allocate space if ... However, it's very common for the older passports to over-heat and the heads go bad etc.

If it does not show up in that disk management list, it's not a great thing. Did it prompt you to initialize the disk?

You can go to www.westerndigial.com and download their software to test the drive too. Hope that helps further.

Yes, there's LOTS of data on it... I'll check the WD website. Thanks for your help!

My brother gave me this drive for Christmas. My brand new Hewlett-Packard notebook shows my c: and D: drives, which are BOTH full, which is why I asked for an extenal drive for Christmas. I ran the WD...

Using the windows disk manager utility will help you see if the drive is connecting to your notebook.
I will be sending you the directions for using disk manager utiltiy on a subsequent post, since it is too large to fit on this post.

I think you will find this helpful. If you do not see the WD My Book on the disk manager utility, then you may have an issue with the WD drive. Check the cable connections, restart the device. Check to see if you hard the WD drive turning.

The next post will come up shortly,

I would appreciate positive feedback if you found this solution helpful.

My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

When i plug in my WD External Hard Drive 500gb it show to be un readable in disk managen ment and gives no options to fix it

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My hard disk is western digital 500GB sata blue caviar 16MB 7200RPM .... it stopped working toady with no reason, it was working fine yesterday night, when i wake up today i found its not working any more...

> stopped working toady (froggy? today?)

It "died" -- either the electronic circuit-board "under" the "spinning" part of the disk-drive has short-circuited, or the motor that spins the recording surfaces has quit.

You've tried it on another computer -- so you've done all that you can.

Any 500GB disk-drive is likely to still be under the W.D. warranty.
Open the enclosure, and get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access the W.D. web-site, and click "check warranty status", and enter that information.
If the warranty is valid, W.D. will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- purchase a new W.D. device from the W.D. web-site, and you qualify for a good discount on your purchase.

Or, remove the disk-drive from the enclosure, buy a replacement, compatible, disk-drive, and "transplant" it into the enclosure, to create a working external storage device.

WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

This is not as complicated as it may sound. You don't need the manager. Bring up the "run" window (XP - Start - Run / Vista Alt-R). Enter the following address [\\192.168.2.1] press enter. The drive will show up. Right click on it and select Map Network Drive. You can then uninstall the useless program from Belkin.

Wd my book 500gb powers up but does not show on list of available drives

So, does it spin on power on or not?
Anyway, if you need that data try to remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect it directly to the computer.

Maybe it might be that the hard drive is dead , you can test if it works by connecting it to another computer or device (ps3) if it works (reads/writes) you might want to try this http://www.aeonity.com/trialerror .You can burn a live cd (Operating system on cd) and this might detect your drive if its a usb driver problem (used to  detect USB devices).
