Question about Linksys DMA 2100 Media Center Extender (DMA2100)

2 Answers

I have 2 extenders - both are doing this: when I reset them they go through the setup and tart to communicate with the PC then they freeze up and the screen goes blank. When I go to the PC it sees them but can't talk to them. The Extenders are on 2 different TVs, same thing happening on both

This problem has affected many Linksys DMA extender owners in the US and Australia since 4 November; European users are unaffected.

Cisco (owners of Linksys) took an update server offline which the Linksys tries to communicate with; when it can't reach it, it fails to startup correctly.

The solution is to block the Linksys from accessing the Internet, at least until Cisco get the server back online -- apparently they are working on this and it should be fixed soon.

There are a lot more details in this discussion thread on The Green Button and I've also written a blog entry with more details.

Cisco have now fixed their server problem, and any affected Linksys DMA units should now be operating normally again.

Not so much a solution as something to check. I've had those problems when either the network was too slow or the server with media center was overloaded / too busy.

Some tips:
-WIreless doesn't work for video
-If this a cabled connection downstream a wireless router, take it out / replace it with a switch. The internet wan link for a wireless router with a gigabit switch can still be 100mb... and get overloaded.
-powerline adapters are iffy and even good ones will not work at times
-if your window media center PC is doing several things already, you'll have trouble starting another extender... esp if it is not a very powerful PC with disk writes not spread out over different disks. Media Center is sort of an anti-tivo design. Rather than break the work up between various medium power video units in different rooms... it's all done on one PC and streamed to underpowered player / extenders. So, I put mine on a quad core, with SSDs for recording media, and some of the fastest fixed drives I could find... that I then raid 0ed for previously recorded programs (ie, I record live tv to an SSD and at 1am a script runs that moves the days recorded programs to larger fixed disks for future viewing).... Now it finally works....

Master reset xerox 8560 printer

Your Administrator Guide book should have these instructions listed for you. It should be on the CD's that came with the printer.

If you have lost/misplaced them, you can download the guides from the website.
The steps below are what I did from my laptop as a Repair Technician:
1. Connect a crossover cable between the PC and system. To print an Event Log or Runtime Log:
2. Verify the system is Ready.
3. Use the system's control panel to enable AutoIP:
a. Select the system Setup menu.
b. Select the Connection Setup menu.
c. Select the Network Setup menu. 5. The page should now print.
d. Select the TCP/IP Setup menu.
e. Set AutoIP to On.
f. Exit the menu so the system is Ready.
NOTE: To print the Connection Setup or Configuration page, select the system Setup
Reset the system to cause AutoIP to assign a new IP address (cycle power or select
Restart system from the Shutdown menu).
5. After the system's IP address is set, test communication by sending the "PING" com-
6. If the test fails, install a different cable and retest.

Wn2000rpt refurbished installation

I found this answer online - but I didn't save where - I did add to it a bit after the ** Leah DH(:

Netgear WN2000RPT Setup Instructions

Maybe since I purchased a refurbished Netgear WN2000RPT it didn't come up with setup instructions but once I emailed support they quickly responded with the info below and it worked immediately.

Do this setup and your Netgear WN2000RPT range extender will work:

1. With the help of a paper clip, press the reset button on the back of the extender for 20 seconds (please refer to the label on the bottom of the extender for reset button location). Release the reset button after 20 seconds and turn off the extender. Turn the extender on after few seconds.
2. Connect the extender to the computer with an Ethernet cable. Make sure that there is no connection between your router and the computer either wired or wireless. (I did this part by turning off the antenna to my laptop)**I went to the Network and Sharing Center and on the left click on "Change Adapter Settings" after that right click on your Wireless Network Connection and choose "Disable". Don't forget to re-enable when you're done.
3. Open a browser to start the Smart Wizard. **I had to use Internet Explorer and compatibility mode
4. Please select your Preferred Language and click on continue.
5. Let the Extender detect the list of networks available in the locality.
6. Select your network and note down the security assigned for your network and click on continue
7. Type in the security key for your network, please note that if you have WPA security assigned on your network type the network key in passphrase box and if you have WEP security setup on your network type in the network key in the Key1 box and click on continue. **I've read elsewhere NOT to use WEP security with this extender.

(Read this one carefully)
8. Assign a name for the Extender as per your choice, also make sure that option "Use the Same security and passphrase as those for the existing network" is checked and then click on continue. **Under the step #3 Configure Extender I had to right click and refresh because there was no "continue" button!
9. Let the smart wizard establish the connection. On the next screen Click on the button "I have connected to the extender network" and click on continue.
10. Now click on the finish button to close the page.
11. It should ask you to save the page as bookmark, please save the page for future use.
12. Now open a new browser and check if you are online. (turn your antenna back on)**Re-enable your Wireless Network Connection.
13. You can now unplug the Ethernet cable from the extender and scan for the SSID of the extender and connect to it using the same network key as for you existing router.

Netgear WN2000RPT Setup

The most important part of the Netgear WN2000RPT setup is that you should NOT just plug it in and use the setup wizard. The setup does not make it clear what you should do when you get to the page with Key 1, Key 2, Key 3 & Key 4. If you follow the directions above which I got by emailing to ask about Netgear WN2000RPT setup then it will work the first time without any problem at all. Just read the Netgear WN2000RPT setup instructions above carefully first and then go through the step by step setup instructions slowly, one at a time and be sure you do exactly what it says. If you follow the directions above you will find that you can do your Netgear WN2000RPT setup without any problem at all.

Need More Help?

Need more help? Don't call me! I only know that this worked for me and it was super easy to follow the directions. I don't work for Netgear and I'm not really a techie.

I own a Florida ad agency.

Not able to connect the extender to my apple time capsule? no wps button. can i use this extender?

Hi, yes you will be able to use the Netgear range extender with the Apple Time Capsule, provided you configure the Time Capsule's wireless settings based from the wireless security you have setup on the Netgear router or extender. No need for WPS button. Just treat the time capsule just like another wireless laptop.
For instructions in setting up wireless settings of Time Capsule click on this link -->>

Hope this helps. Glad to be of service.

Cannot communicate with printer. Told to Turn

Restart your computer.
Press <DEL> to enter BIOS SETUP.
Find the setup-screen that changes the mode of the printer (PP/"Parallel Port" or EPP/"Extended Parallel Port", or ECP/"Enhanced Port"). Select EPP or ECP.
Then, 'SAVE' the updated BIOS settings,
and exit from BIOS SETUP.
Restart your computer.
The box will _not_ be "grey".

Won't play videos and Library updates slowly I have a DMA2100 and am having trouble setting it up properly to work with a storage device - Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. I store my videos, pictures and music on this device and have tried configuring in several different ways. I can get the DMA 2100 to work sometimes. It appears to connect properly to my HP Vista laptop but I experience some of the setup and symptoms below: 1) Router - DLINK DIR655 2) Linksys DMA2100 - connected to the network via ethernet 3) HP 8510p Laptop Vista Ultimate (SP2) - connected to the network via wireless 4) Netgear ReadyNAS Duo - connected to the network via ethernet 5) Playing videos from DMA2100 - I select the movie from my library (stored on ReadyNAS Duo) - I get the following error no matter how many times I try to play it. ?Cannot Play Video? The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec blahblahblah? ? - I then go to my Vista laptop, select the same movie and let it play it at least a few seconds, stop and close it. - I go back and select the same movie on my media extender and it will suddenly work! - Its almost as if it needs to be preloaded on the Vista machine first. This seems an unnecessary step to watch movies on my extender and am trying to figure out why this is happening. 6) Getting DMA2100 to update Library is excessively long if at all. I suspect that I have an improper setup at the storage device or the Vista Laptop Any ideas???? Your help is appreciated.
