I just took my daughters Dell 1501 apart this week end for the same problem. Found a burnt component under the proccessor's cooling unit. it was shorting out the incoming power from the AC adapter.Trying to find out if this is a common problem or maybe a design flaw.

Here is a picture of the burnt component. This could be caused by condinsation from the cooling unit, don't know?

Sorry can't seem to post pic from comments. The burnt component is under the cooling unit for the proccessor. Maybe getting condensation from cooling unit dripping on board and causing corrosion.

Remove the battery and then plug it in and power up. If it then powers up put the battery back.

When I turn on my dell inspiron 1501 the light next to the start button with the letter A flashes but nothing else happens. I have my life on this flippin computer - HELP!

Your data is probably ok so don't worry about the data portion.

You can try swapping / reseatting the memory and booting the computer with the battery out.

If you don't have any success then it points to a motherboard problem, most likely.

If it is indeed the motherboard, I would seriously consider a new Dell since they're only about $200-400 for decent laptops.

You can remove the hard drive and place it into a usb enclosure to remove your personal files.

Hope this info helps.

I get the message ''The model number for the primary battery cannot be determined. This will prevent any battery present from charging i've flashed the new bios recommended by dell to stop the battery...

The Battery LED is indicating a battery failure. So the next step is to replace it. The battery life is generally 300 to 500 discharge/recharge cycles. So it appears a replacement battery is due.

Dell inspiron 1501 work fine turn off last night now wont turn on

You mentioned trying a different battery, try a different AC adapter.

When plugging in the ac adapter to the wall, see if the POWER LED comes on on the adapter, then when you connect it to the computer, see if the LED stays on.

If the issue occurs with both AC adapters (No battery installed) then the motherboard has failed. If one ac adapter works but the other doesn't then the adapter is bad

MY INSPIRON 1501 WONT START!

Do you mean to say there's No power or wont boot into Windows ?
Did you check your RAM and made sure the're properly seated ?

Try tapping on F8 while rebooting to go to Safe Mode and selecting "Last Known Good Configuration"

Replacement battery for Dell Inspiron 1501 won't charge

If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
