    Thanks Lee,

Sorry I didn't give more detail. I have a lap top. HP Probook 4510s. The OS is Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 3). I had a student version of Office 2007 and Adobe CS4. I don't know if there is a motherboard or where it is.

    Thanks Lee,

I have a laptop. I don't know if it has a mother board. I got this in February, 2010. It is a HP ProBook 4510s. The OS is Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 3). I had a student version of MS Office 2007 and Adobe CS4 loaded. Do you need more info?

If you give me the exact model of the motherboard I will be able to get you the sound driver so you can install it. Once I have that information I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

Don't be panic. you can try some format recovery software. You can see
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.

If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the hard drive and recover your files.

All is not lost! (although that drive is most likely a goner...)
Modern hard drives take a beating better than their older counterparts, though they remain semi-fragile devices that rely on super precise internal balancing and magnetics. You're right that it's most in jeopardy when writing, but the sound you're describing indicates that it's read/write heads can't align themselves correctly.
The bad news is there's no way for you to remedy this without a state of the art clean lab and the precision tools to re-manufacture, or simply realign as the case may be, this hard drive.
The good news is most hard drive manufacturers offer a data recovery service for their hardware, so you can send your drive in and get back a fixed one complete with your old data. Even if you're out of service I'd call regardless as most are happy to sell you into recovery work. If you find that it's a dead end, don't despair. Do an internet search for 'data recovery hard drives' in your local area and you may be pleasantly surprised. Many Data-smith companies exist these days for the sole purpose of recovering data that was lost to a drive crash.
Best of luck! William
