Question about Sony KDF-E42A10 42 in. LCD Television

1 Answer

I had the 3 blinking lights flashing from the Power/Standby on my Sony KDF-E42A10 so I decided to replace the lamp. After replacing the lamp, I still have the same exact problem...with the three blinking red lights. I checked several times to make sure the lamp door was closed properly - it was - so I thought it might be the dust build up inside. I cleared out some of the dust with one of those air cans you use to clear out dust from your keyboards, but now the t.v. is completely off, won't turn on, and there are no lights displayed on the power/standby. What can I do now? Buy a new t.v.? is this fixable?

    Thanks Tim,

The t.v. actually started to power back on but still getting the three blinking lights. I dont understand whats going on with this thing because I tried putting the door back on "properly", moved the new lamp and jiggled it around in there and still nothing. What could I be doing wrong?

yes...when i press the power button I can hear it powering on, the light turns green momentarily, then it shuts itself off with the three blinking red lights. Thanks.

Thanks Tim...really appreciate your help! Will take it in to get it checked out. Last question...do you know how much (ballpark) something like that would cost to get repaired? I'm considering buying a new t.v. vs. repair

Sounds like a failed or at least failing power supply / power board inside the TV. Unfortunately this is a very difficult repair, and unless you are an electrician I would not recommend attempting it. You will want to contact a local TV repair person in your area if you are sure this is out of warranty, more on that in a bit here. This is actually the most common problem with this type of TV, I see it every day, it just happens - sometimes with new TVs and sometimes it takes many years for it to happen.

If you think it may still be under warranty please contact the manufacturer to file an RMA. If you happened to purchase the TV with a major credit card (not a debit card) there is a good chance it may still be under the free extended warranty most credit cards place on electronics. Please contact your credit card company to inquire if they do this, and they will be able to file the claim and get you a refund for the TV.

If you want to attempt the repair yourself please let me know and I will get you the part number and a place you can purchase it from for what you need.

So sorry that I don't have better news but it is definitely a power issue internally. Please feel free to reply if you have more questions or comments here.. but it definitely sounds like power issues. Hopefully you can still return that lamp you do not need...

Thanks
Tim

Hmm very strange, so you are saying it is powering on and working now, but you are still getting the blinking? It could be just stuck in a fault code without realizing it has corrected itself somehow. But something tells me if those lights are still blinking it is not fully powering on and working?

    Let me know here..

Ok then it still is having power supply issues... you may want a local TV professional to help you get the power supply replaced, but that definitely sounds like what is going on. It is definitely not powering on correctly and that is what the 3 blinks means, a failed power supply.

    Thanks

You are definitely wise to consider just replacing the TV... With the price of TVs having come down so much recently it is probably much more cost effective to just replace this one. You are looking at at least $300, and that's if you can find someone that is extremely reasonable. You can get a new TV online that is arguably better for less than $500 shipped, such as this one here:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003924...

You can also just sell this one on craigslist or the link, listing that it has a known issue, needs a replacement board, and some adventurous tech person such as myself will probably come along and pick it up for $100... basically meaning your new TV would cost you LESS than repairing it.

That is what I would personally do. Any time you have a TV that has issues like yours has it's possible multiple components will go out all at once, meaning if you do get it fixed it may have another problem in 2 months and then you'd really be driven up a wall, I know I would!

My parents have a Sony KDF-E42A10 42" LCD TV. They have audio, but no video. Screen is black. Do you think they need a bulb replacement?

Yes, if lamp has not been replaced in last 2-3 years then it is lamp problem. If tv does not shut down and its standby light does not blink in red then lamp is cause of problem, replace it to fix tv issue.

I have replaced the lamp block and now the power stand by red light is going on and of (this was a new lamp block). Do I need to reset some how?

Hi,
If standby red light is blinking 3 times after three second pause then check lamp cover that has no been fixed in its place correctly, it is first thing that you removed from tv cabinet to replace lamp, make sure lamp cover is back in place properly and tight.
If standby red light is blinking more or less then 3 times, let me know to diagnose problem.
Thanks.

Sony KDF-E42A10 rear projection TV. Won't turn on.

Start by changing the lamp. If you got 5 years out of the old one, count your blessings, most folks only get three. The lamp is designed to be replaced by the consumer. Ebay will carry a replacement for you or you can get it directly from rivervalleyelectronics.net. They've got good prices. The lamp door is on the back. Its really easy, give it a shot.
