Alex,
My xbox won't boot up. The splash screen freezes half way thru. I replaced the cables and the hard drive. When I took it to the store today it booted up fine. Any thoughts?

There is probably something wrong with your hard drive or connection, as far as I know, the hard drive itself is not serviceable, (though I would love to be proven wrong if I am). If you can, try to get your hands on another hard drive, maybe borrow one from a friend, and try it on your console. If it works then your hard drive is toast, if not then you have a problem with the connection to you console. I don't have a repair proceder for the console connection problem as I have not yet experianced that particular issue and was unable to find someone who has, try calling 1.800.4my.xbox if a replacement hard drive does not work.
Have you re-connected the sata cable the correct way round,if you put it upside down you will have problems, connect it the other way around and see if it works.
It sounds like your console was suffering from screen freeze, if it would not respond to your controller commands, the best thing to do to cure this is to replace the heatsink paste on top of the gpu(under the small heatsink) then repace the clamp by screwing the heatsink to the board, this is basically the same cure for rrod, so there are plenty of guides around.

Hi, I think your hard drive has failed. It keeps searching for the boot sector. The boot sector is broken so the hard drive keep starting over to search for it.
i have had a similar problem with the same game, i took it into gamestation and you know how they have that disk repair machine thing, it worked a treat and my game was working good as new.
Try disconnecting the data cable from the hard drive, then see if you can boot to the Resource CD. If you can, there is a good possibility the Hard Drive is bad.
If no difference, then try disconnecting everything but video, see if the system will boot past the Splash screen. SOmetimes periferal items cause issues
The motherboard controls the fan speed - and laptops often turn it off entirely when it is not needed. This sounds like a motherboard issue where an internal trace is broken and sometimes it makes contact, other times not. There's probably nothing you can do except replace the motherboard.
