SSB off frequency - Cobra 148 GTL 120-Channels Base CB Radio

The radio had the Extra Channel Mod done Before i got it, AM and SSB worked great when i did use this radio 15 years ago, It sat around in a closet till couple of weeks ago when i powered it back up and seemed to be working normally till i tried talking on Sideband, i can tune people in but then they can't tune me in like i am way off on transmit, Like Transmit and receive are not lined up on Sideband? On AM with the clarifier straight up it is right on frequency, unable to determine what frequency sb is on?

  • ecparker2002 Nov 06, 2010

When i tune someone in with the clarifier on Sideband i hear them good it is way off to them when i transmit and they can't understand me claiming i am off frequency, This radio dose slide some, ex.... 27.2134- 27.2158 is what i can monitor on AM With a frequency counter. What i have done with a buddy is Both be on LSB put my clarifier straight up/middle of range(which should be at 27.215 like on am?) I give a count so he can tune me in but i can't understand him so i tune him in so i can hear his count then i am off frequency to him, We have tried this several times with him using different radios with same results. This is why i belive on SB i am out of Alignment?

Your problem is NOT a "tune-up" but an "ALIGNMENT" issue. Tune-ups are simply raising the output and receive capabilities in radios. When you take your radio to a tec, have him install a "swing kit" and ask to have the "dead key" as low as possible (2 watts or under). Ask that he turns up the modulation and NOT CLIP THE RESISTOR!!!. Clipping a resistor can result in an over modulated radio with no control to adjust! Also ask him to adjust the "receive" and make sure it is maxed out!!! I could look up the specifics and tell you where all the adjustments are but it would do you no good if you do not have a watt meter but still, it won't solve the alignment issue so take it to a tec!

Hi, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. It will take a tune-up that involves some expensive meters. The tune-up should be only about $35.00 to $45.00. The 148 is a great radio, I have three myself and they are great. Only your local licence tech. can do it, or any CB shack. Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa...John

Yup Kinda of what i was thinking, was hoping it was somthing i could do, but it sounds like it will be beyond my skills, now to find a shop in Northern CA around Sacramento/Stockton area that would be willing to do this work on a modified radio is like finding a needle in a haystack....Any Sujestions on shops in this area would be helpful......

Just got a ranger rci69ffb4 CB radio. I do not know how to operate it. What band number to put it on to talk. There is 1-7 on it. And do I put it on an or ssb mode. Thanks

If you want to talk on AM put it on AM if you want to talk on SSB then put it on SSB. Did you recently purchase this radio? You do realize you need a ham radio license to use this ?If you are on the upper ham bands you better have a license or they will come and get you .Look at the the dial that has 1 - 7 on it. Now take the owners manual and look at the diagram of the knob . It should say something about frequencies and the frequency you need to operate on is from 26.965 to 27.405 MHZ .

Yaesu ft-990 no receive or transmit

Lynn, SSB (Single SideBand) only applies to AM (Amplitude Modulation) transmission. There is no way to broadcast SSB in FM (Frequency Modulation) mode.

How to change frequency of ssb fs-1503

For direct frequency input: i.e 2061.4khz transmit - (TX), (2), (0), (6), (1), (4), (ENT) - use (RX) for receive frequency.
For ITU channels - (CH), (4), (1), (2), (ENT)
Direct frequency inputs are restricted to authorized marine band frequencies.

Cannot select USB or SSB.Displays LSB or LISB? Very poor reception

On the Satellit 750 you have a button marked SSB. If you have selected a shortwave band then you can press the SSB button. Pressing the button repeatedly will toggle between LSB and USB.

You will need to know the exact frequency and the broadcast time, and the side band. Turn the radio on. Select a frequency which you know carries SSB signal and wait. Those that broadcast on SSB are not radio stations, maybe ham radio operators.

You can also select a short wave band, press the SSB button once or twice to select the side band and launch the automatic tuning system. It will scan the meter band and stop for a few second when it receives a strong enough signal. If you are able to perceive a clear signal on LSB or USB then you found a broadcaster. Some radios just have SSB and you cannot choose the side.
Personally, when I buy a radio I always insist on SSB but I have never been lucky tuning in an SSB signal. I keep trying once in while.

Symptom:Buzzing or motorboating sound in either the transmit or receive.
Problem: TR602 is oscillating
Cure: Replace C602 with a .01uF cap {Cap is located in the power supply board}.
RG 66,99,DX2517 Replace Q54 2SB754 60watt 7A with a higher power 2SB817 100 Watt 12A. Derating of this component will cool operation, provide better voltage stability, decrease wobble, allow voltage increase to 14.5 volts comfortably. (replace 10 volt caps in this section of the radio to a minimum of 16 volts before increasing supply voltage to this level)and provide faster swing rise time, Replace Q37 2SA473 to a 2SA1012-0 or ECG153 this will improve the clarity and volume of the modulation and it will also run a lot cooler.

Sideband carrier??

im not sure carriers are measured in pounds, but SSB is a supressed carrier mode, in SSB only one sideband is transmitted and the carrier is inserted at the other end in the receiver. In AM mode the carried and both sidebands are transmitted. with regular am there is a carried and when modulation (your voice) is added a signal appears both above and below the carrier frequency at a distance relative to the frequency of your voice. so if you have a carrier at 1000 khz and modulated it with a tone of 100 hertz the signal will contain frequencies of 900,1000, and 1100 hertz, then its changed to SSB by supressing the carrier (1000) and one sideband (1100) if you are on lower sideband and (900) if you one upper sideband, and transmits the remaining frequency.
