Hi The recorder is about 4 to 5 years old and although not used lately It has recorded both to DVD and HDD.
I understood the Laser was in the burner DVD box assembly. The DVD box P/# 6744BSUN39A box was replaced with a new one but the fault remained. Where do I find the laser.
    Thank you. IKBM

The DVD component box was replaced with a new box and the problem remained the same. The recorder is trying to work and has twice produced on DVD and HDD a 2 second recordings which run on playback repeating.
Most of the attempts when the fault started resulted with the message "Unknown error can not record" or " error in HDD recording and playback is detected". Playback on recordings made prior fault all work.

Hi icantry. Thank you for the assistance. Yes I can solder and use a temp controlled iron.
Is it correct that the laser in the DVD mechanical drive box has input to the HDD operation. Both DVD and HDD respond with the same symptoms and the same result. In this case the new DVD drive assembly was rellaced with a new componment. That would seem to iliminate the Laser.

Hi Greg. Ihave tried a number of DVDs with the same result.
I have found that I can record HDD to DVD and DVD to HDD.The problem seems to be in the RF area of the DVD recorder. When set up to record a TV program the audio is lost and will not record. I am close to buying a new recorder. It has been interesting.
    Regards Ian

Hi Greg. I have connected an earlier model LG DVD recorder using the same connections as the defective recorder and the earlier DVD works O/K. Apart from the TV connected when the fault was first detected, two other TVs have been used in the fault finding process. All the standard connection combinations have been tried.
After each attempt to record and fails, STOP pressed, the recorder will try to write to HDD or DVD. This usualy locks up the Recorder. It was a good but looks like a component failure. Thanks for your support. Ian

Is this a brand new unit,or did this just start happening? If it is brand new,a DVD recorder needs a digital input to record.By this it means, you either need to hook it up outside cable to cable box to recorder to TV.Or it needs it's own internal tuner section which will enable you to change the channels by using the recorder, not just having a play/record button. If you let me know what you have, cable box or none, and brand new or not,I can figure out what is wrong. Thanks,Greg

If the laser were bad,it would most likely not even be able to detect the disc,or even playback the 2 second loop at all.It is inside on the bottom side of where the DVD would be,and basically is probably about 1 square inch in size, only slighter larger if at all, and has a glass bubble looking clear lens on it.The laser mechanism moves very slowly as the movie is playing due to the fine lines which it is reading(barely noticeable). You would have to contact LG about a new one or a local repair shop if you are going to try it.There also could be a sensor which is not allowing it to move past 12.If something were wrong with the one that 'tells' the recorder that it is at the end, like for DVD's which take more than one disc, that would do it more likely, since the disc is being detected.I have found a contact for them and will try to find out if they are open.If you want to try, just go to and support.I am going to see if it would require a whole board or individual component because I don't know if you can solder yet.If you can't,it's not difficult or if you don't want to that's fine.I bet you could find someone local who can though. We'll see.Just letting you know there are options, even if you cannot do it.Greg

I just saw your recent reply.Did you previously try to record on this DVD when your problem started? It would definitely cause a loop to be stuck on it from before.Have you tried a different DVD yet?You probably can reformat the current DVD to wipe it clean,if you haven't tried another DVD.Since I have seen no mention of either, try one or both if you haven't.If you have, let me know.Greg

One last thing to try would be try someone else's recorder,VCR or whatever it takes. That would double check to make sure it isn't the TV's output gone bad.I am not sure how you have it hooked up right now but it is worth a shot.I think I know how it is connected, and you would save from throwing out a good recorder.Greg

how long have you been using this LG recorder of yours and have you ever successfully recorded from DVD to HHD in the past?

From the look of things, I think the laser (lens) of your recorded has depreciated and doesn't have the ability to burn/record. This usually happens when a when a recorder's laser is weak.

Being weak does not mean the lens is bad or that it will not play DVD discs. But note that recording with a player requires a very active laser.

Recorders usually depreciates gradually by not recording completely, then when it gets a bit bad, it would start skipping DVD disc and later not load.

Good luck.

It is quite a common problem. What I do in my shop is to open the unit, and replace the DVD writer (is the same as a standard PC one) with another IDE DVD writer. (any model will work, but I try keep LG with LG etc)
Once you replaced the drive all should be back to normal. (I also use LG dvd writers on Daewoo recorders)
Hope this helps.

Try using Dvd-r instead.

How do I transfer recordings off my lg hdd RH1999H to my laptop? Is it even possible?

The generic answer is yes you can. You will need to use a software app like Pinnacle Studio V10.5 onwards (currently V14) or similar II think that Roxio have a product too) that will take raw video format from the DVD Player / recorder and convert it to MPEG2 files that you can then convert to any other format. You can then edit them and put them back tot he DVD Player / Recorder in the correct format for viewing on TV. This will also allow you to burn customised discs with TV content etc.

Disk recording and playback stopped working

Generally this means that there is either an internal issue going on, or that the laser has become dirty or has defected. Try bying a simple DVD cleaner disk and running that through a few times. If that does not work the product may be defective -- in which case I hope that you still have a warranty -- and if you do return the product promptly for a new one.
