Question about Polaroid i-Zone Webster Handheld Scanner
The scanner is connected to a serial port. I've inserted the installation CD, but it doesn't autostart. I've tried to open the installation file directly from the file, and tried to run D:/setup.exe as the instructions say, but nothing happens.
Your antivirus or system profile is quietly getting in the way, likely. Check logs if you like, then do the footwork to let installer programs run. Contrawise you can copy the driver to a directory someplace and install from there, perhaps using RunAs (in WinXP.)
Perhaps you should say which OS you intend to install it on?
That cheap substitute for a webcam?
It's more trouble (because of the AA batteries) than it's worth! Get something useful!

ø Locate the serial connector on the bar code scanner. Bar code scanners, like other peripherals, connect to the computer by way of a data cable. At the end of the serial cable should be a rectangular, typically male connector. The cable may be pinned with nine, sixteen, or more pins depending on the design of the scanner.
?? Locate the serial port on the computer. Most computers have at least one serial port, usually found on the back of the machine. The port will be female, maybe blue in color, rectangular in shape, and should be approximately the same size (or slightly smaller) as the serial connector.
?? Connect the serial cable to the computer or connected peripheral. When both the connector and port have been identified, push the serial connector firmly but gently into the port. Like USB connectors, serial connectors are keyed so that they can only be inserted the correct way; if you feel solid resistance while inserting the connector, remove the connector from the port, turn it over and plug it in. Do not use excessive force while pushing on the serial connector, as it is possible to bend the connecting pins and damage the connector.
?? Install bar-code reading software. While the bar code scanner can scan the bar code into the machine, software must interpret the meaning of the code. Bar code scanners, if purchased new, should include a version of proprietary bar code software compatible with your specific scanner. If your scanner did not come with software, or if it is missing the installation disc, bar code software may be purchased on the Internet from sites like WaspBarcode.com.

Unpack your new scanner and set it up. Follow package directions and setup instructions to assemble any parts that need assembly.
Plug in your scanner and power it up.
Insert the setup CD in your CD-ROM or DVD drive. It should autotomatically run. If it doesn't, click on "My Computer" and then on the CD or DVD drive to open the CD. Look for a Setup.exe file. Double-click on it to launch the setup disk.
Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the end-user agreement and install the necessary drivers and software to run your new scanner.
When prompted, connect the USB cable to the scanner, then plug the other end into the USB port on your desktop PC.
Windows will recognize that a new device is available on your computer, and find the necessary software and drivers to install it.
Restart your PC if prompted to do so.
Check all cable connections to be sure that they are secure.
Disconnect the USB cable from the desktop and the scanner.
Turn off your computer and let it cool down for 10 minutes.
Turn the computer on, then turn the scanner on. Reconnect the USB cable to the scanner. Try connecting the other end of the USB cable to a different port on your computer.
If none of these suggestions solve your problem, uninstall the scanner and start over.
