Question about Goodman PHKJ048-1 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

We gave a Goodmn Hertz 60 Phase I heat pump - installed this summer....worked great for cooling..now that temps are dropping we are needing heat. When we turn it on it comes on but never heats. Think it was not programmed to switch to heat....is that something we can do?

If you changed the unit but didn't change the thermostat it is possible that the thermostat that you have will not work with that unit. I see that the unit you installed is a heat pump, you may have a straight cool T-Stat. If you put the T-Stat in the "Auto" "Heat" mode the outdoor fan and the compressor should be workng as well as the blower fan. If it turns out that the outdoor fan and compressor are not running you will want to buy a Thernostat that is compatable with heatpumps should be 2 heat/ 1 cool

Had 16 xi Trane heat pump installed 3 years ago. It ran well for the first couple of years. It began to stop heating and would blow cold air only. Have tried both aux heat and reg. heat to run and neither...

That's a complicated system that needs a qualified technician to service it. Lots of people can install them and they run fine, for a few years. Your indoor unit, operating on 2 heat elements, will feel like its blowing cold air even though its heating, just not so well. And not like you are accustomed to. Each element (5kw)=22.7amps, on average. So 3 elements operating should trip a breaker. Its probably been operating on 2 heat element plus the heat pump. And now you have trouble with the heat pump. If you can't TRUST the guys working on your equipment, try someone else. A second opinion. Normally a 3 or 4 ton unit will have 15kw heat installed, heatpump or not. 5 ton, 20kw. If yours is a 3-4ton, cooling, the 100amp(or normally two 60 amp) breaker should have been installed upon equipment change out. If yours is blowing cold all the time, something is wrong with your heatpump. The electric heat inside operates only when the heatpump can't keep up(real cold outside), the heatpump is in defrost(then it's actually in cooling mode), or if you have the tstat in aux/em. heat. Try a local trane dealer? Of a technician with 15-20 yrs under their belt. A trane dealer should have trane tech support also. BIG HELP!!!

Look at the temp on your scanner data

What do you usually see on other vehicles
for temp?

Why would you bypass a heater core?
What does that prove?
Customer needs heat

Use an infared gun & combustion gas tester

Cool air comes out when the heat turns on. When I switch to Em heat, warm air comes out. Over the summer the air worker great, however when I switched to heat on the thermostat, cool air came out. Why?

Check the following. 1. Your setting temp must be higher +3 than room temp. 2. Check heating sensor.3. And also heater element.(If it's reversal valve, checke RV is working)

I HAVE 1.5TON AC IE WINDOW a\C IT CONSUMES MORE

Air conditioners compressors are high starting torque motors , although it uses 15 amps running , it takes perhaps 3 times that briefly to start a compressor. Thats why in the old days the lights dimmed while the ac started etc. Air conditioners are designed to operate at 95 outdoor/ 80 indoor. The design temps are 80 air into a 40 coil gives 60 supply temp, for a 20 temp drop with each pass.
The outdoor coils are 30 above ambient so the hot outdoor air will still be cool in relation to the hot refrigerant gas and remove heat to condense it back to a liquid. Since the pressures and temps are according to ambient there isnt any way to not have the amp draw increase with load.
That said check the breaker for age and replace if not pretty, check all connections for tightness, consider dedicated circuit.

Previa Heater Problem

Previa heaters are usually ultra-reliable.
So, regarding your question, the only reason for the temp gauge to drop down with the heater on is the thermostat is sticking open, or you have a lower than recommended thermostat installed. The factory thermostat is a 192 degree F/89 degrees C stat. Down your way, a lot of the parts places vend the "summer" thermostats, and I suspect that this is your problem.
Look to see what the temp degrees that are printed on the stat. Should be 192 F or 89 C. The "summer" stats are 185 F/ 85 C. Also, make sure that your stat has a small "wiggle valve", some aftermarket stats do not have this. Very important. Install the stat with the "wiggle valve" pointing straight up/12 o'clock...
Regarding your trans dropping out od OD, this is because the coolant temp is dropping below 172 degrees F. This is the threshold for the OD to engage. Below 172/no OD engagement.
