Unplug... Install drivers and software 1st!... Then plug in usb

Your computer uses USB Mass Storage Mode to detect your Garmin unit. If your computer does not detect your Garmin unit, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

Unplug the USB cable from the computer.
Turn the unit off and then back on again.
Plug the USB cable into your computer.
The unit either automatically goes into USB Mass Storage Mode or displays USB Mass Storage Mode as an option on the screen.

Note: If your computer still does not detect the unit, make sure that you plug the USB cable directly into the computer USB port and not the USB hub. If the cable is already plugged directly into the computer, try plugging it into a different port.

take it to a computer that has windows vista on it. hook it up. in about 15-30 seconds it will recognize it as a removable disk under the computer icon in the start menu. you dont have to install anything or touch the screen. vista will recognize it automatically. it works, i have a pre as well.

Change the mini usb cable. Some mini usb cable are for charging and not data. It happen to me and used the externo hard drive usb mini cable and zapppppp my computer nows read the gps and gave it a drive (h:\). hope it works for you.

When I hooked the nuvi 350 to the PC, the PC like a normal USB device. It could not recognize the drive on the nuvi. The solution is to change the drive letter as outlined in the manual. Google nuvi 350 manual (I got it at http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/Nuvi350_OwnersManual.pdf) , download the manual, and go to the appendix. Look under 'USB interface troubleshooting'. This worked like a charm

Go to the Garmin site and download you USB driver. Install the driver with out the GPS connected. Aftter the USB driver is installed reboot you computer and then connect the GPS. Let us know if that works.

If they don't give you a new one under warranty, are third party Garmin repair services that will fix it for cheap. Also, I found an DYI GPS repair guide,so you can do it yourself too, not that difficult to solder in a new USB port.

I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.

What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.

you can use any USB cable, there is nothing specific about any particular brand... now the computer has to recognize the phone. You need the software/driver.
