Question about Acer Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an Acer Aspire M5100 with a Acer F690GVM motherboard, my processor broke and I have a new one, an AMD Athlon II X2 250 which is Socket AM3 and the computer has an AM2 socket but the AMD processors should be compatible with Sockets down to AM2, but when trying with it, nothing happens... The fans just turn on but the computer doesn't start or anything, is there a way to fix that? It's a brand new processor so I'm pretty sure it's not broken...

AM3 Processors are, as you state, backwards compatible with AM2 Sockets. However, this is based on a BIOS update and may not be the case in all motherboards. I would recommend checking with ACER directly, as to weather they have relased an update for this bios to support this function. I have done a search but turned up nothing, but they may not have released it yet. My initial thought was that this seems to be a problem with these OEM boards.

Is the Am3+ socket also possible for sapphire AM3RS890G2?

am3+ socket is what the socket is listed on the motherboard, so if you have a CPU that fits only AM3+, the CPU wont fit it unless directed by the CPU manufacture seeing that AM3+ is for AMD processors only if you have a older AM3 CPU it might fit the AM3+ motherboard if listed, this paticular model only lists AM3 and fits Sempron, Phenom II X3, Athlon II X2, Phenom II X2, Athlon II X4, Athlon II X3, Phenom II X4, Phenom II X6

Processor update..

The problem with Store bought PCs is that there is no way to tell how fast a proccessor you can safely put into one before it becomes overclocking, but in theory your exact motherboard should support an AMD Athlon X2 5800+ 1000 Mhz FSB. Now if your willing to take a risk, you could buy a 6400+ but be warned, the computer may not recognize it, or it may just underclock the proccessor, if the processor supports 800 Mhz FSB. I said the 1000 Mhz FSB because it can underclock to that speed, and also because they no longer offer 800 Mhz flavors at the sites i order from. Hope that helps.
