CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Check is a process that helps in identifying any errors that might occur during the data transmission process. Data is usually transmitted in small blocks, and a CRC value is assigned to each block and transmitted along with it. This CRC value is verified at the destination to ensure that it matches the CRC value transmitted from the source. A CRC error occurs when the two values (source and destination) do not match and the test fails. The main benefit of CRC is that it helps you ensure that data you have received or downloaded is not damaged or corrupt.

Causes of CRC Errors

CRC errors can occur due to many different types of problems. Some of these problems are:

  1. Damage to file during the transmission process.
  2. A problem occurred when the file was being sent.
  3. Problems with the device that is accessing or opening the file.
  4. Problems with the file itself.

I'm trying to move an mp3 file from the desktop to my flash disk but a pop-up window always appears saying "cyclic redundancy check". what shall i do?

Everytime that you write a block of data to your 'C:' drive, a CRC ("Cyclic Redundancy Check") value is calculated, based on the data, and it is written onto the disk, right after the data.

When you ask to read that data, the CRC also is read from the disk.
A new CRC is calculated from the data that was read.

If the "new" CRC is "checked" against the "old" CRC.
If the two values do not match, then the disk-drive either did not correctly write the data,
or it did not correctly read the data.

So, that part of the disk-drive occupied by your MP3 file is "bad".
It might be a sign that the ENTIRE disk-drive is soon to completely FAIL.

> what shall I do?

Backup all your files to an external storage device, while you still can access your files.

Crc failed

> my disk is new .. provider says that there is a problem in my PC ...

Without running any disk-diagnostics, how could he be correct??????

> CRC failed

CRC === Cyclic Redundancy Check

When a block of data is written to the disk-drive, a CRC-value is calculated, and also is written to the disk-drive.

When a block of data is read from the disk-drive, the CRC-value is recalculated, and is compared with the CRC-value that was written.

Any difference between the "old" and the "new" CRC is an indication:
* the disk-drive is faulty
* the RAM in your computer is faulty -- like trying to write with a pen onto paper covered with butter, any values written into the RAM cannot be _exactly_ read back from RAM. So, the calculation of the "new" CRC has produced an incorrect value.

On another computer, search for 'MEMTEST86+' -- download this free software, and write it to a 3.5" diskette or to a CD-R. Then, boot your computer from the diskette or the CD-R, and let 'MEM(ory) TEST' run for a few hours, in order to perform extensive testing of the RAM in your computer.

CRC Failed

Two issues will cause this kind of error. #1, bad optical drive(bad cd drive) #2 Bad memory. You can replace either one by yourself. To have it properly diagnosed on which one of these it may be, take it to your computer shop or replace both items yourself depending on your budget.

Error 0175

A bad CRC1 is a failed motherboard component, that generally has to do with the bios programming. Unfortunately, motherboard replacement is your only option.
