Question about Fasco GSW Hot Water Heater Exhaust Draft Inducer Blower # 63172

1 Answer

Is there a reset button on the GSW Series 5 Water Heater? If so, where? Also, am trying to drain heater to flush & can't find where to initate it. There's suppose to be somewhere (there's already a drain hose attached at the bottom of the tank) to put in a flat screwdriver to get it to start draining but am not sure where it is. Thanks.

GSW Series 5 water heater is electric water heater.

http://www.gsw-wh.com/index.php?context=/products/waterproducts/gsw/electric/standard
The link above goes to the GSW page, but the manual does not match the product shown in photo

GSW has a phone number in the manual:
1-888-479-8324

I cannot see the manual, but I might be able to help.
Every electric water heater has a red reset button located on the thermostat.
Normally on a two-element thermostat, the ECO or reset button is located behind the upper panel.
Your water heater seems to have a box located where upper panel is located.
Without the manual, I do not know what functions are performed by this box.
If there is a thermostat setting on the face of the box, then maybe there is also a red reset button.

That being said, you want to drain your water heater.
The GSW water heater has a drain valve.
If the valve is plastic, rotate the knob counterclockwise.
If the valve is brass, use a screwdriver to rotate stem counterclockwise

The photo shows the screwdriver slot for brass drain valve

If your water heater will not drain, it is probably clogged with sediment at the tank bottom.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html
Connect a washing machine hose to drain valve.
Connect garden hose to outdoor spigot, and to washing machine hose.
Turn on outdoor spigot for 10 seconds and this will open the clog.
Repeat procedure if clog is still there.

If your water heater is clogged with sediment, you will want to clean out the water heater:
Follow the step by step on link below:

I need to flush my Atwood L/P Gas water heater MPD 93756 I'm unable to locate where you add the vinegar. Can you advise!

Remove hot pipe connection, and flush out through drain valve.
Or remove TP valve and flush out through drain valve.
Connect small circulating pump to 5 gallon bucket with 2 gallons white vinegar like they do with tankless water heater, as shown following Bosch manual. And let run for 45 minutes.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bosch_Descaling-heat-exchanger.pdf
White vinegar is safe for humans.

If odor is the problem, use H2O2 hydrogen peroxide, and not bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is safe for humans and easy to flush out of water heater and pipes. While it can take weeks to get rid of bleach, which is caustic and toxic.

Is there a reset button for a 6G50NVH-FV-02 hot water heater

Depends on gas control valve, and if cause is overheating high-limit event or FVIR flammable vapor event.
Turn off water heater when using flammable vapors, clean burner parts to prevent overheating.

1) GSW Residential power vent gas water heater with FVIR system:
Some models have intelli-vent gas contol
Others have robershaw gas control with auto-reset

2) Parts manual shows #15 'auto-reset' high limit switch on the blower
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/model/27484
http://www.gswpartsonline.com/schematic/137/view

3) Possible manual:
http://www.gsw-wh.com/pdfs/GPD135NInstall.pdf
Shows resettable lockout page 15
Water temperature must be 120 degree F or lower for reset. Unplug power cord, and then plug back in and wait 15 minutes or 60 minutes depending on gas control valve.
Some intelli-vent controls must be replaced when 195 degree high limit event locks out the water heater.
If high-limit lockout repeats, then gas control must be replaced.
Also clean burner parts, air intake, and make sure flame is clear blue. and not yellow-or-orange.

4) Intelli-vent service manual might apply to your water heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Intellivent-service-manual.pdf

If FVIR flammable vapor event locked out heater, then unplug heater and plug back in.
Immediately press two temperature buttons. Wait for green light to blink. Release buttons.

Need instructions on how to drain and flush.

You posted under water heaters.
Always let a water heater cool off before draining.
Hot water can cause serious burns. Immediately put burned area into cool water.

There are different types of water heaters, and each might drain and flush differently.
Open following link for typical gas and electric tank-type:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html#flush

To drain and flush tankless, it can be called de-liming tankless.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Troubleshoot-Rheem-Tankless-water-heater.html#de-lime
Be sure to read tankless manual for instructions and advisories, and required maintenance.

If you have boiler, or indirect water heater, solar water heater, or RV heater, the instructions above may not apply. be very careful with a boiler due to extreme high temperatures.
Add a comment and give more information about heater, for possible help.

I have a GSW Series 5 water heater (electric). I think the heating elements are bad or going bad. The heater is about 12 years old. Its a 40 gallon heater, and I've noticed the amount of hot water is less...

It may be one of 2 elements not working, a thermostat problem, scale build up in tank, to name a few possibilities. You'll need to shut off power to water heater before doing anything to it, and perform a few tests, and check a few things to determine which one is the cause. After power is off, you remove cover(s) on side of tank and peel back the insulation to get access to element(s). Keep in mind that should you need to change one of the elements, or both (assuming it has 2 otherwise you wouldn't have any hot water at all if only 1 element and not working.) This is where it would be good to have a voltage meter ( or multimeter ) and know how to use it. Is that possible? Before you reply, please shut off power and remove cover(s) to be sure whether single or dual element. If it's single, it may just be thermostat adjustment, or faulty, or scale build up around element. Keep in mind that water to tank will need to be shut off and tank drained down below element before removing/replacing. Get back to me with info on single or dual element. Thanks
