Keyboard settings fouled up

Toshiba Satellite A10
I just replaced a shorted systems board with a used board. All other hardware and the software are unchanged, except for adding an additional memory card.

It now boots WindowsXP OK, but several of the letter keys act as single-key shortcuts to various Windows dialog boxes. Any ideas on how to reset this? None of the language settings, etc. change it.

Another issue is that a DAQ Card used to interface to an instrument now causes the laptop to freeze when inserted. Problem occurs whether the card is inserted before booting or after.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brent

With regard to the keyboard problem, removing the CMOS battery on the Toshiba Satellite A10 laptop did not work to reset the CMOS. I have since read a comment that said this does not work on laptops.

Is there another way to reset the CMOS, or other suggestions on how to fix this keyboard problem?

Hi,

On the motherboard there is a small watch battery. Remove this battery along with the main ATX cable from the power supply. Hold down the power button to fully discharge the system. Wait 2-3 minutes then reinstall the battery and plug in your system. Your reset is now complete,.

This is another way:

Since some motherboards have a 3 pin jumper by the battery. Lets say that the jumper is on pins 2 and 3. Remove the jumper while the machine is OFF and place onto pins 1 and 2. Power on your machine for a minute. (Note: Your system will not POST). Shutdown your machine and put the jumper back to pins 2 and 3. Your reset is now complete

Goodluck,

Have you replaced the motherboard with another similar board, or is the chipset different? Also make sure that the chipset meets the requirements for the DAQ card..
As for the keyboard, make sure that the contacts on the connector interface between MB and KB are clean and dirt free.

Apart from that, the only thing I can think of is that the repalced board may be defective..

Hello brentlewis !!

About the single key shortcuts , can u just try reinstalling the keyboard drivers!! It might help u in resetting it as i know !!

And for the DAQ card try connecting to other slots ..

This is a pictorial disassembly guide for the A200/A205 series,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a205/laptop-disassembly-1.htm

Follow Steps 1 through 17. You can click on any photo to enlarge.

1) Remove ALL power to the laptop. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

2) Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove. Label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.

If no multi-compartment container is available, you can substitute with a clean egg carton.
Label each egg holder.

SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws. DO NOT mix them up.

3) Follow Anti-Static Precautions.

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

It would be best to buy, and wear an ESD wrist str-ap, and have the alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
(I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case)

The service manual is in PDF file form. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name { A215 } it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

The page number box is at the top of the PDF file, to the right of the Down Arrow. The Zoom In, and Zoom Out icons, for viewing size, are to the right.

You can click on each individual area, Keyboard (Page 152), and Display Assembly (Page 155)
Removal of the Top Cover is covered in Display Assembly.

From your diagnoses of the problem, I also concur with Function Button Board replacement. (Power Button Board)

How do I remove the hard drive in Toshiba SatellitePro A10 EN? (Removing the plastic cover exposes only the end of the hard drive. I'm reluctant to just start pulling on it!

  • The original Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 HDD is fitted into a Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive cradle - Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 HDD caddy.

      • Gently remove the cradle from the laptop, yes pull on it
      • Unscrew the original Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive & remove it from the cradle.
      • Screw the new Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 Hard Disk Drive into the cradle & refit the cradle into the laptop.
      • Re-install XP or Vista

The m and caps lock keys on my Toshiba satellite

Bad keyboard. This series have a higher frequency of keyboard problems because ... well .. the keyboard cable got folded by design. Just replace it. The A40's uses the same keyboard as a A10, A15, A55, A60, A64, 1400, 1405, 1410, 1415, 2400, 2405, 2410, 2415 ... and many others. A new replacement keyboard should run about $20 on eBay.

Replacing the KB is easy: lift up the power button board above the keyboard, remove the three screws holding the keyboard down, then remove the keyboard connector cover panel, and you'll be able to disconnect the keyboard.

HOW DO I CHANGE CD/DVD DRIVE IN A TOSHIBA SATELLITE P105-S6114?

You can use the Toshiba Satellite guide for removing and replacing the DVD/CD-ROM drive or the keyboard. On this model you have to remove the keyboard in order to remove and replace the DVD/CD-ROM drive because the optical drive securing screw is located under the keyboard. Always start laptop disassembly with removing the battery or you can damage the system board if you accidentally touch it with a screwdriver and shorten traces. Removing the keyboard strip is not very difficult, use your fingers to release the plastic latches. If you want to replace the keyboard, do not forget to unlock the connector on the system boar before you pull the cable.
