# I have a Rheem Model # 82V52-2 and its being supplied by 25 amp breakers. They do not trip out but the 100 amp main gets real hot and trips out and I believe it happens when the water heater is in use- any help for that? thanks

The Rheem water heater uses 4500 Watt elements
Check label on side of any appliance to see electrical rating details
2 element tank with two 4500 watt elements is still a 4500 watt appliance since both elements are never ON at same time.

Volts x amps = watts
amps = watts divided by volts

amps = 4500 divided by 240Volts or 220Volts
amps = 18.75
Your water heater uses 18.75 amps to 20.45 amps

Your 25 amp breaker should only carry 80% of rated value
25 amps x 80% = 20 amps.

So your water heater breaker is correctly sized.
You should have a 10 gauge wire going to this water heater.
12 gauge wire is a bit undersized for 4500 Watt water heater
Feel the water heater wire to see if it is warm.

If the main breaker is getting hot when 20 additional amps are being used by the water heater.
1) The house is using more amps than your 100 amp main can carry
Using the formula, 100 amps x 80% = 80 amps for the main breaker
For example if your 3500 watt oven is ON, it draws 16 amps.
If your 5000 Watt electric heater is on, it draws 23 amps.
Your 1500 Watt 120V microwave draws 12.5 amps.
Add these numbers up plus your water heater, and it comes to 71 amps.
71 amps is getting close to the max 80 amp, but it's not over.
Now if you have a pool pump and and hot tub and a table saw going, the main breaker could be overdrawn.

2) To solve the problem short-term, you can put a timer on the water heater and use it only when needed.

3) The main breaker is bad and needs to be replaced.

### The water heater breaker keeps tripping and I have to reset it to get hot water. It continues to be a problem, what should I do?

Thermostat could be bad causing the breaker to trip due to it being shorted. It's either your breaker or the thermostat, more than likely the upper thermostat is bad.

I don't have specific suggestion for tankless tripping breaker or if that is a circuit breaker problem or a tankless problem.

1) Move wires to another same-size breaker and see if problem persists.

2) Compare amp draw on tankless label with wire size and breaker size amp rating.
For example 30 amp breaker using 10ga wire is rated for 80% of listed amps or 24 amps.

3) If you are drawing full 30 amps, then 30 amp breaker is getting hot. Breaker trips with heat. Older breakers can trip more easily.

### No hot water

You posted under Rheem 40 gallon electric water heater, which is two-element 240Volt heater.

If you suddenly have no hot water, that narrows the suspect list.

Step1:
Check for tripped circuit breaker.
Open top cover on water heater and push in reset button on upper thermostat.
If reset button is tripped out, and will not push back in, then replace upper thermostat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html
Put ear against tank and listen for bubbly-fizzing sound that says heater is ON.
If reset is not tripped, then move to step 2

Step 2: use tester or multi-meter and test across top two screws on upper thermostat for 240Volt.
If heater is not getting 240V, then test circuit breaker.
Move water heater wires from 240V breaker to another same-amp 240V breaker and see if that restores power.
You may need to replace breaker:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-circuit-breaker.html
If problem persists, then you might have a line problem between breaker and water heater.
Open cover on top of heater, and check connections on top of heater.

Step 3:
If heater is getting 240V, then upper thermostat or upper element is bad.
I suggest 30 minute troubleshooting which could save you a service call, and will be valuable information in the future:

### I need to know where the reset buttons are located on the 30gal model 71-305 Rheem hot water heater. Help I'm not getting hot water so I'm trying to start with what may be a simple solution.

Shut off all power to water heater at breaker panel, remove side cover where thermostat is located. Test that there is no voltage at connections, with meter, to be 100% sure you shut off correct breaker. Thermostat should have a red button in middle to depress to reset if it's tripped.

### I have no hot water in my house. I have a Rheem model #82V52-2 with a 50 Gal tank, mfg date 11/2005. Please help I don't want to have to pay someone to come over. Thanks!

There are several possible points of failure in your electric water heater. The easiest to check requires no more than a look at your main electric panel and locating any tripped circuit breaker. If done properly, it should even be marked as 'Water Heater.'
These breakers are not immune to failure; they can trip for no reason if defective. If you find a tripped breaker which may have two breakers visibly mechanically connected, reset it by pushing it to the tripped end first and then to the 'On' position. If there are no faults in your heater elements or the breaker, you may be finished already.
The other failures would require that you obtain a multimeter so you can check continuity of several items. Such meters, most digital today, can be found at auto parts stores, Radio Shack and other electronics outlets. If you have a Harbor Freight Tools store in your area, you can buy them there for well under \$10 US and the simplest will do the job. You shouldn't have to spend more than \$20 US to buy a usable one and any of them are very useful for simple home and auto troubleshooting. They are also numerous on eBay:
