Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

I have a 2006 Whirlpool MH1150xm microwave. I just noticed I have a small 1/8 hole in the inlet cover below the magnetron. It looks like the plactic got burned and melted. Not sure how it happened. Is the microwave dangerous to use now? Is there something I can do to fix it without replacing the whole unit? It doesn't look like the cover is a replaceable part.

SOURCE: microwave

A microwave needs all those surfaces to be fully reflective. those scorch marks greatly affect the magnetron. it will soon burn out . reccommend a new microwave.

SOURCE: Small melted hole at microwave

It should be okay as long as none of the holes in the fine metal mesh / screen are damaged or enlarged and as long as the door closes fully and evenly.

Keep an eye on it in case it gets worse or any food or grease get stuck in the hole. That can lead to arcing & severe damage.

SOURCE: Paint damaged in side microwave oven

1) How is the cavity damaged? Is it just peeling paint, or is it rust? If it's rust then the microwave could be dangerous.

2) The antenna cap usually has a small hole in the centre, but if there are any other holes in it the magnetron itself could be damaged, and holes caused by the magnetrin arcing.

My whirpool oven is working but does not seem to be heating as it should I wonder if the fan is not working

magnetron do get week over time even more so if you do a lot of short time food reheat, the fan normally is used to cool the magnetron wave guide and if it stops working the over temp safety will trip and stop the magnetron from working

DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! undertake this job unless you have a pair of discharge leads and you know how to discharge this appliance the capacitor holds a charge large enough to kill you for about a month

If the housing of the unit isn't too difficult to remove (normally 3-5 Phillips screws around the rear edge), with the unit unplugged of course, check for a user replaceable fuse inside. The magnetron is separately fused and fuses can fail due to metal fatigue. It will be high amperage; 10-20 amperes and many hardware stores will have them. BTW, there is no residual radiation from a magnetron that isn't operating.

Whirlpool Talent Microwave The microwave starts off ok, then during cooking its still turning & the light is on but its not cooking. It can go on like this for 8 or 9 minutes and then you hear a small...

That is the magnetron faulty. The oven stops cooking, as the magnetron lose contact, when the magnetron restart working you hear that loud bang, and it restart radiating.

Replace the magnetron.

You find parts here or here.
