I will be on track to a site when my GPS goes blank with only a blue line across the screen. When I take out the batteries and replace them, it will power back up, though I have to start all over to get back to my original reading. It then can go out again at any time. I am so frustrated with my unit, for it is no longer reliable. I need it fixed asap. Nancy Taylor

If you don,t have the patch cable to connect to PC, and have the fix via Garmin web site downloaded,( cable is approx 34 u.s.d. for the gps 72 ) then you can get around the problem by disabling the wass feature. Quality control messed up on this one. The unit will not shut down or cause further problems with the update installed , or you can simply disable the wass feature and it will work. Unfortunatly the unit will not be as accurate when not in the wass mode.. Go to the Garmin site under updates and downloads and download the web updater. Too bad garmin will not eat the cost of the patching cable due to thier software problem. I went through this with them, to no avail.

I have the same problem on my new Garmin eTrex Vista. Screen goes dead randomly after a few minutes or more of use and have to take batteries out and then put them back before unit responds again and the blue line on the screen goes away. VERY frustrating.

As mentioned before, disabling the wass feature will do away with this problem of the ( DREADED BLUE SCREEN) and having to remove power source then re introducing the power source, only to go through the whole thing again. Or >>> Download the fix via Garmin web site ( free ). You will need the interface cable to transfer the data once download from your computer to the unit though. This cable is approx $ 34.00 u.s.d., and as mentioned on Garmin site, if you screw up the data transfer it will have to go back to factory. The wass feature makes the unit more accurate, but the unit will function very accuratly with this feature disabled...

I have had some success by deleting some of the tracks that were stored in the GPS. Mine was at 100% memory full and it was getting the blue line every few minutes, I deleted the tracks and some other waypoints I didn't use and it has been back and working for me. The next one I get will not be GARMIN GARBAGE!!!

White screen with red blue vertical lines

If the unit was dropped there may be nothing you can do. If you are skilled with electronic repair you may check the circuit board connections inside, but internal damage to the board or screen will most likely be beyond repair. If the unit is fairly new there may still be warranty coverage, check with Garmin.

Device freezes up with vertical lines. Have to reset to come on.

It needs to be rebooted. Turn off, by holding off button down. Then once it is completely off, then turn it on, BUT when you go to turn it on, keep on button depressed, all the way until it turns on and then some for about 15 seconds, now you just rebooted system. Let me know, mike

My gps72 just started going off and a thin vertical line appears on the screen. the onl way I can get to come back on is to remove one of the batteries and then it will turn on again and the problem starts...

You need to update the software version to 2.50. You will need a data cable that connects to a serial port on a computer. Be sure to have fresh batteries in the unit and set it to simulator mode when you turn it on and then update. The update is on garmins website.

Where can I buy a new screen for my Garmin GPS 72

You cant. The best Garmin will do is supply an exchange refurbished gps. Alternatively source a second hand unit from somewhere eg on line with a good screen & swap them over.

When the unit turns on all looks well, until the gps gets a position anf then it shuts down (screen goes blank. Is there a way to reboot ther GPS

Is it connected to a power source? If not then it may need to be fully charged and then connected . Many GPS fail due to low battery power or a bad power source.

Screen Blanks

Contacted Garmin Tech Support and they verified the problem with the WAAS. They said the engineers were looking at the problem. Estimated the fix would be ready in 2 to 3 months. I turned the unit on inside where the unit could not receive any satellites then disabled the WAAS and the unit works without problems. It is just not as accurate.
