Check for vacuum leaks at all 3 flanges of the intake manifold if it's plastic.

Why does my Briggs & stratton 24 hp intek v-twin **** and pop at full throttle causing black smoke out of the exhaust?

Does it do this when you start it or turn it off? If yes to either one you must install a gas chock in the fuel line. It's a valve. You turn the valve off and let the engine run out of gas. When starting you turn it on obviously. By draining the carburetor of gas it won't overload anymore and backfire when turned on/of f.

My Poulan Pro 500 EX backfired, then quit, now it seems to be dead. I am thinking a safety wire is keeping it from cranking. Any suggestions?

Sometimes, if the overhead valves are too FAR out of adjustment, (yes, you have to adjust the valves periodically ) starting will be difficult and runnability will be compromised. This also affects the ACR system (automatic compression release). Most backfires occur during shutdown when the engine hasn't burned off all the fuel it ingested from running earlier. One tip to stop this is to let the engine IDLE for at least 15 seconds before shutting it down. But your issue is not with the backfire. The backfire should not have affected any of the safety switches. Check the usual things; compression, spark, fuel flow and air filter condition. If they all check out, remove the valve covers and inspect the operation of each of the valves. The engine will have a specific model number. Here is a Briggs spec. chart that list the clearances for your 22 HP Twin Cylinder engine.

Engine won't start and backfires

Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.

B&S V-Twin 24 hp has done 150 hrs and has now started to backfire a lot. Engine starts well

Take off the valve covers and check the valve lash. @ tdc on compression stroke then same on exhaust stroke the clearance between the rocker and valve should only be .001 to.003 in.Carefully adjust to this tolerance, may cure your problem. seems this is a common problem.

Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
