SOURCE: my basement flooded and now my gas water heater

Was the gas valve under water? If so it must be replaced. If not, and you're sure you are holding in the button for at least 30 seconds after the pilot is lit, the pilot will need to be removed disassembled and cleaned. Also, the thermocouple may or may not be bad, replace it anyway (for the cost @ Lowes etc just not worth it).

SOURCE: pilot light on water heater wont stay lit

The thermocouple has failed. It is the temp probe that goes from the pilot lite burner area to the control valve. Go to your local plumbng repair shop and buy one. Most appliance parts stores have them also. Take the old one with you and they will hook you up with an exact replacement. They are not that hard to change. Usually a nut or 2 screws in the temp bulb area at the burner end and a nut that threads into the control valve.
Make sure before you install the new one that the area where it mates to the gas valve is clean. Should be about a 20 min job including clean up with replacement parts in hand.

SOURCE: Pilot won't stay lit in Reliance 606 gas water heater

The Reliance 606 has an enclosed thermal couple. Before you try taking that assembly apart take a wire brush to the bottom opening directly under the burner. There is a metal filter on the very bottom of the water heater. It could be that the filter has gotten filled with dust or animal hair. It took a serviceman 2 days to figure this out for me. The water heater has to have good airflow through that filter to work well.

My hot water heater won,t stay lit

Question posted under Reliance tank-type gas water heater.
Look at label on side of unit and add comment with brand, model and type heater, because the answer depends on which brand and type water heater you have.
Information below is for Reliance tank-type.

First of all, you need to clean the air intake located on bottom of unit.
The fact that the pilot will light indicates that you are getting gas, but the gas control might be bad, or the unit suffered FV failure from overheated combustion chamber and might require part replacement.
To get a good gauge of situation, clean the air intake first, and then add a comment.
Look at image for inspecting air intake.
Then use feather duster and/or compressed air to clean flame trap, arrestor screen (air intake)

ADD A COMMENT with more detail.

I light the piuolot button and when i let go of the pilot button the pilot goes out does not light burner wont stay lit

When you light the pilot lite you have to hold the button down until it gets the element hot enough to stay lit. If you hold down the button and lite the pilot and let it go right away it will go out. What to do is hold down the button and lite the pilot and continue to hold the buttn down for about 45 seconds to a minute then let it up very slowly and you will see if it is going to go out by the flame getting smaller as you let up on the button. If it does start to get smaller conitnue to hold it again for a few seconds and repeat the process of letting it up slowly. when the control element gets to the right temperature it will stay lit then turn your valve to "ON" and the fire will start up and continue to heat the water.

Water heater pilot keeps going out. Relight and may stay lit for a day and then goes out again. Now won't even light at all. Has an igniter button. Also says to clean intake screen every 6 months. Where is...

the intake screen or as is called flame trap is located on the very bottom of the heater underneath. this is very important that you keep this clean or it will keep going out. this is the only way this heater has to get air to the burning chamber.
