Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

No anything I have a Dell Dimension 9100. Last night while trying to plug in a USB cord for the widescreen monitor, I got a USB power overload error which I reset after trying to plug it in twice. This is a weird Usb cord because it has four small holes that plug into four pin like projections in the Usb port. Upon examining the port, it looks like the pins might not be lined up quite right. I suspect the cord was pulled out when we moved the computer earlier to install a new hard drive. Anyway, on the third try to plug in the Usb cord we got the blue error screen and were unable to do anything but turn off the power. Now the computer will not power up. All we get is two amber flashes when we push the power on button. I've tried reseating the power cord, reseated the power and 20 pin connection on the mother board and on all the internal drives. HELP!!!!!

Flashing amber power button indicates a failure of the power supply.

I am pretty confident that replacing the tower power supply will get the system running. The issue, that started the problem may be more involved. You describe what appears to be a damaged USB port on the motherboard. If the pin connections are bent abd you push the plug in the port you may ground out the power lead causing a short circuit. The MAY have blown the power supply, but also MAY have damaged the motherboard.

I suggested the power supply 1st as it is the most often failing part and cheaper than the motherboard.

My dell inspiron 9100 will no longer charge. it was working fine last week. i unplug it and it discharges like normal but when i plug in the cord it says its charging but will not go above the percentage...

Depending on how old the laptop is, the battery may need to be replaced. Since it charges, I would not suspect the power cord, so indications may lead you to requiring a new battery.

Good luck

Have you unplugged the power cord to the LCD? Let it sit for a minute, then try it. ALWAYS buy a UPS and plug any computer devices into it. Doesn't have to be big, a $50 unit will protect it from dangerous voltage surges.

Dell Dimension 9100 PC Desktop problem

I'm not sure where the floppy drive comes in, but if you have usb connectors on your mobo then you can connect the 5 pin connector to half of the usb pins.  Try that and see what happens.
