the gas pressure regulator can whistle sometimes. turn up the radio. (just kidding) I have had some new units that did this and replaced the regulator and it still did it! I was working as factory authorized service tech and my factory techline said it was a gas pressure thing. I was thinking it was the valve rather than regulator but tech guys said no. I don't know about that response but thats what I got.

All it needs is a 'flame sensor'. It's small device that will 'prove' that there is a pilot light. Most older units had a thermocouple in the pilot flame that does the same thing. Any Heating and A/C company can help you with this.
