Question about Iomega (33654) Limited Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My laptop crashed while the external drive was hooked up by usb. Had to shut both down. Now the hard drive will not show up on any computer as it did before and cannot be opened to be viewed. I need the files on it to be accessible.

The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

the computer for some reason is not fully detecting the ext drive if its usb then try other usb connections. if it has sata hook up try using that there a much better connection but dont worry i think youl find that all your information is still on the ext drive thats why we should all use external drives for all our important photos music and files because when the pc blows or crashes then the other drive is not affected

p.s if the ext drive can with a driver disc try reinstalling it.

good luck

You don't say which version of Operating system you are using. My thoughts are to first go to "my computer" and see if your drive shows up there. If not, get to disk management and see if it shows up there. The crash possibly could have messed up your external drive, and now it needs to be initialized and/or formatted.

SimpleTech 250GB External Hard Drive can't be recognized

First of all,

uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in the device manager for USB Hub Properties, Power Management Tab.

Try rebooting the computer once as C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 file may be corrupted and need to be replaced (either restore a previous version or just delete it and try connecting again).

Next,completely uninstall all USB devices and the main hub and then re-install.

Can't Find Hard Drive.

Go into the notebooks bios and see if there is a boot from USB in the boot sequence section. If there is, then enable it. If there is none, then it will never boot from an external drive.

Hard drive crash

Possibly. It depends on the crash. If the drive won't spin at all, then there is one way, but it will have to be sent off and it's expensive. If the drive still seemingly works (spins and tries to read), then it has a bad sector and some of the info, that is not effected by the bad sector can be retrieved. You can do this yourself by purchasing an IDE to USB, or SATA to USB hard drive connection cable, depending on the type of hard drive that's in your machine. Sometimes you can find them at Bestbuy for around $15, make sure it's for laptop and not desktop. This cable allows you to hook any laptop IDE /SATA hard drive to your machine as an external and read it or use it for extra or backup storage.
