Question about Western Digital Caviar (wd800lb) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Installation not happening

I've set up a hard drive externally via USB, and my computer knows it's there, but I'm unable to access it: it doesn't show on 'My Computer' as my other drives do.

Ideas?

No; I have the drive connected to my computer throught a USB cable only...

  • wingslover Jun 14, 2008

The computer knows that it's missing (however no alert pops up). When plugged back in, I can see it only in the device manager: once again no alert on the screen. At no time is the drive available for me to add information to it, and it does not appear in the 'My Computer' window as a drive assignation: the only place I can see it is in the device manager folder.

Unable to access my folders and files from WG passport ultra external drive. How to fix it?

Try connecting to a different USB port and restarting computer.back USB ports are better than front ones as they connect directly to motherboard.do not panic but if this still locks out then you must connect to another computer or laptop as first stage.usually these happen when someone switches off the main machine whilst it is still writing to the external drive which can corrupt a file and cause unread ability.one you have access run a quickscan to fix files and folders on the external drive.get back to me if none of the above fixes this problem and I will point you towards some some ware to correct further likely problems.

I want to turn a memory stick into hard drive. How can i do that?

you will need usb data drive at least 4 - 8 gb

Download the GParted Live utility and the HP USB Format Tool via the links in Resources.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5757&file=15&evp=fb0a8fee133295405b5af3205e8d2424

Insert your USB stick into the computer. Run HP USB Format Tool. Select your USB stick and then choose the FAT or FAT32 format options. Click "Start."

Extract the files from the GParted Live zip file. Select the USB stick as the destination.

Open a file browser and navigate to the USB stick. Select "utils" > "win32" > "makeboot.bat." Double click on "makeboot.bat." Enter "Y" when prompted.

Power off your computer leaving the USB stick inserted.

Connect your portable hard drive to another USB port.

Power on the computer and quickly press "F8" through "F12" to access your boot menu.

Check your computer or motherboard manual for the exact keystroke.

Select the USB stick as your boot source and press "Enter." Allow the Gparted GUI to start.

Select the external portable hard disk drive. Click "Partition" on the menu bar.

Hover over "Format to" and select "NTSF."

If you are unable to create or format the partition, select delete partition.

This will erase all data on the external hard drive. Confirm partition deletion. Select the external drive again. Click "Partition" and hover over "Format to" then select "NTSF."

Select the external hard disk drive again. Click "Partition" on the menu bar and then "Manage Flags." Check the box next to "Boot." Save and apply changes to the drive.

Power off your computer and remove the USB stick.

Install the OS

Insert or plug your OS installer, usually a DVD, CD or USB thumb drive, into the computer. Power on the computer and access the boot manager again.

Select the source containing your OS installer and press "Enter."

Enter your personalization and registration information if required.

When prompted, specify the portable hard drive as the install directory.

Begin the installation normally.

Restart the computer when prompted and access the boot menu again. Select the external hard drive as your boot source and press "Enter" to ensure the installation succeeded.

Use this process to boot from your portable drive on any computer.

hope this helps

I've had my external hard drive My Book Essential for a while now and had no problems with it until now. I would usually plug it in and the pop up screens would ask what you would like to do like...

The fact that it displays a '0% used' indicator probably means that somehow the data that you have hitherto stored on your external hard drive has been erased. This might not necessarily be the case, so don't panic yet.

The first thing I would try doing is reinstalling any software that came with your WD My Book. Not many external HDDs require additional software to run properly, but if yours does, then I strongly recommend reinstalling that first. I would then try using Windows Disk Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the G: drive as a hard drive, because I have had to use disk manager when I've added additional internal hard drives to my computer. If neither of these work [or you could not find the CD your My Book came with] I would search around online for driver or software updates available for your device.

One thing that I noticed while typing my suggestion for you is that before you attempting using the back up feature on your My Book, the drive for the My Book was (G:) but after you attempted the back up process the drive is indicated as (H:). I think that what might have happened was that when you attempted backing up the My Book, it was partitioned into a storage section (G:) and a section in which the backup data is stored (H:). If you can find and access it, the (G:) drive is likely to still contain all the data that you previously assigned to it.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I sincerely hope that your problem will be resolved.

If you are using a usb hub disconnect it completely and try connecting your Western Digital directly to a usb port on your laptop. If that doesn't work try booting into safe mode and see if it shows up then. If it works in safe mode a recent update to your virus program or another program could be blocking it. Hope I was of some help , Thanks for using FixYa

Hello. I recently installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate edition. I was initally unable to access my seagate external HDD. I tried to take ownership and played around with the permission settings to no avail...

It may be the USB chipset on the motherboard that needs a new 64bit driver downlod. I used Driver Detective to update my Intell chipset when I upgraded to 7 now all my external drives show up. Try using other USB ports on your computer first to force the computer to reload the driver for the new port.

Try it on another USB and if no luck on another computer. If another computer recognizes it try reinstalling your chipset drivers.
