Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet
This could be only one of two things:
1) Your internet is OK, but the page you are trying to access
2) Your internet is not connected, but Internet Explorer is loading
MSN from an old cache on your hard drive.
If a single page is bad but you Internet is connection is OK,
then you should be able to get most other pages.
If, on the other hand you get nothing but MSN,
you have no internet connection !
To test it out:
Go to the DOS(like) command prompt, by clicking:
START => All Programs => Accessories => Command Prompt.
At the command prompt type: ipconfig /all
Look at the report, find the network adapter you are using
(if you have more than one, e.g. LAN and wireless)
and look for the value of the "IP Address"
This should reflect the address assigned by your Internet
provider, or the address of you personal router if you have
A typical router address = 192.168.1.1, for example
A direct connection could be = 24. 153.14.1 or any other #
if the IP address is all zeros = 0.0.0.0
then you have no connection to the Internet.
If you have no connection (0.0.0.0) then type:
ipconfig / release
ipconfig / renew
ip config / all
If this does not fix the problem, i.e. return a non-zero
Run the network setup wizard from the control panel to
repair your network settings.
Also reset your external router (turn it on and off)
if you are using one, and check with your IP provider
to make sure that your account is still valid.
(They will disconnect you if you owe them money
or if they have made a clerical error)
If you do have a non-zero IP address, but your
WEB browser still does not connect,
type at the command prompt:
1) Ping www.google.com
2) Ping 184.108.40.206
Compare the results.
If the first PING does not work, but the second one does,
then your address for the DNS (domain name server)
is not setup correctly. You can reach Google directly,
but you have a problem resolving the GOOGLE name to
its binary address, which is what a DNS does, but you
are not reaching the DNS server.
At this point you may want to contact your IP service
provider (tech support line) and he will walk you through
repairing your Internet connection, or send out a tech
in the case of a hardware problem.
