SOURCE: the left ear bud wont work
This is usually caused by a short in the wire. The most cost-effective solution is to buy a new pair. "Shure" makes very nice ear bud headphones.

SOURCE: faulty sound
It can be either a dead speaker or (almost surely) a broken cable. The only way to find which and where is to dismantle it and test everything with an ohmmeter. Start with the volume casing and the piece of cable between it and the jack.
