I bought a home theater system with DVD player that said compatible with mp3 players. From what I understand you have to have a CD with mp3 format? My question is can you just play the music that you already have on the mp3 player without a CD? Or did I get screwed?

Which One For All remote do you have? The manuals and code lists for most are available here: http://www.oneforall.com/support/manual . Use the drop down menus to select Universal Remote Control and then the specific remote model. Then click on the link to the manual.
You may need to program the amplifier and the dvd player separately. The codes below are for the URC-9960. RCA Audio Amplifier codes: 1023, 1254, 0531, 1390, 1609 RCA DVD Player codes: 0522, 0571, 0717, 0822
Please note that universal remote controls only have codes for devices released 6 months or more before the remote was programmed. If your Home Theater System is newer than your One For All remote, you may need a newer remote.
hi,check first if your CD format is compatible with your player such as audio CD,mp3,VCD,DVD.etc. If the CD plays on your player before then that is a lens issue this probably needs cleaning and if cleaning dont work then it's time to replace the lens of the player..and replacing the lens requires skills and proper tools I would suggest to bring your player to a qualified service personnel thanks and good good luck!
If your DVD player is a home theater system then the sound would come through the HT system, not the TV. On your TV you should have an 'AUDIO OUT' jack, plug that into your HT system where it has the 'AUDIO IN' or "AUX" AUDIO IN. Then when you are watching TV, just set your HT system to AUX mode or AUDIO mode.
Hope that helps.
