I just swapped a new DVD drive from a 40 GB PS3 to a 60 GB PS3. It won't read the PS3 game or a DVD. What it will do is recognize a CD. It will give you the track info(how many tracks on disc & play length of each track) but will not play the disc. It says something about a network error & the data is corrupted. Do you have any ideas on how to solve this? Do I need an internet connection in order for the PS3 to work?

You might have multiple issues going on here. First take a can of air and blow some air gently into the dvd drive. This will make sure there is no dust or dirt on the laser. If you still can't get any discs to load then the drive is probably bad but since no controls are working new or old, it could be a motherboard problem in which you would need to either get it replaced by Sony if your ps3 is under warranty or just get a new PS3.
Sadly it sounds like your blu ray laser has become faulty. Unfortunately this is a very common problem for the PS3 and there is not much that can be done about it. New lasers can be bought but they are difficult to fix. You could buy a new drive from somewhere like ebay at a cost of around £60. They are much easier to fit than the lasers themselves but you must make sure you keep the circuit board on your blu ray drive and swap it to the replacement drive as this is paired to the motherboard and will not work if it is not with the original motherboard.
Hope this helps you out and thank you for using FixYa
This is most likely do to a previous freeze up while on the PS3. All you have to do is to first disconnect all of the plugs and wires. Then you put them back in and turn on the PS3. It should read your PS3 game discs.
