The bottom doesn't come apart. you have to remove the top cover to get to any components. But if you have a burning smell, then it is probably ther motor and would have to be replaced. Motors cost anywhere from $70 to $90.

What is causing the beater bar brush to spin extremely fast?

HI, it's Jim from Crucial Vacuum!

First thing is to be sure to unplug your vacuum. Once you begin smelling a burning smell it's essential to stop vacuuming immediately.

One of two things may be happing here:

1) Your brush roll may need replacing. It's possible that the sides where it attaches to the vacuum have been worn down with age. The bristles falling off is a clear indicator that it's time to replace the brush roll. Also, look for debris, or hair that's wrapped around the brush. Remove all of this with either a razor, or a scissor.

2) Check your vacuums belt. Is it wrapped around the brush roll at all, or is too loose? If so, this means there's no tension around your brush roll and it could be causing your vacuum to overwork the motor and overheat, hence the smell.

Clean this area out and then replace the brush roll and belt. You should be seeing a noticeable difference in both your vacuums suction, and a lack in the burning smell.

Burning smell

The response by Lynnette is in reference to the power nozzle....if you are having this issue with the main unit, then it could be the armature is starting to go bad. Have your Rainbow in front of you and give us a call. We can walk you through some steps to narrow it down.

Changed belt. have burning smell

Take it back apart, check it again. Check the plastic where the belt is running for burnt spots. Also check the brush roller sometimes the tension from a new belt can finish off what was left of the bearings and cause the plastic end caps and roller to melt. Pull out the roller and try to spin it while holding the end caps. If it doesn't spin or spins hard there's your smell. Most times when the rollers go bad they break the belt. Replace the roller if necessary Make sure the roller is in correctly and flush and that the bottom plate goes on easily.

My h20 vac is smelling like its burned out it aint sucking up and just want to know how do i fix the problem when it turns on

Sounds like the beater brush has frozen up and the belt is being burned by the motor.
Follow the instructions to change the beater belt and when you have the brush removed, clean it as best you can. At each end of the brush, add some WD40 to help the brush spin easier in the end holders attached to the brush. Reassemble and be sure the new belt is properly installed so the brush moves in the correct direction.
If you find this solution to be helpful, I would appreciate and appropriate Thumbs Up rating from you.
Be well, Paul

I have Hoover Widepath Bagless 12 Amp Windtunnel vacuum. Yesterday I was vacuuming and smelled smoke and it shut itself off. Today I cleaned out the filters (they weren't bad) made sure nothing was...

Hi There,

When a vacuum cleaner smokes, it is usually only one of two possible problems.

It could either be that your motor burned up, or that your belts burned. The belts on this particular model are notorious for breaking, but the fact that your machine doesn't come on at all after this happened, sounds like it may be the motor.

Both of these issues have a unique smelling smoke. If the smoke smelled like an electrical burning smell, this indicates it's your motor. If the smoke smelled more like burning rubber, then it's probably your belts.

If the smoke smelled like burning rubber, here's a video that we've recorded showing step by step how to inspect, trouble shoot, and replace the belts on your vacuum cleaner. If you open it up and the belts are still in tact, then this probably is a more serious problem of the motor burning out.

. I'd be more then happy to walk you through more advanced diagnosing if this doesn't fix your problem, please just use the comment box here on the Fixya repair page.

If this was helpful to you, please be so kind and rate my repair helpful, or leave some feedback for me. This is really appreciated by the Fixya community if the repair solution was able to fix your problem.

Thanks again,

Thr brushes are not spinning and it smells

That is your belt burning, turn the vacuum upside down and make sure your brush is spinning freely. Something may be wedged in your brush.

Burning smell and smoke

When you turn it on....is the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.

Roller brush won't spin (bissel 6390/3910 series)

I just fixed mine. It took me all of 10 minutes. Pull the brush out. Stand the brush on end on the edge of your study work bench/table top. while holding the brush vertical( on end) take a small phillips screwdriver and tap using a hammer on the metal pin you see in the middle of the brush. Keep tamping and the whole assembly will come apart. What you will have then is a long metal shaft, 2 bearings(they are acutally skateboard wheel bearings same number same make). Clean the gobbed up hair with a razor blade and then reassemble by tapping back together. The bearing wont be worn out because they are way too tough for a vaccum. We used ride down hills on them! a ten minute fix wow and you wont have to drive to vacuum shop and spend $$ and time
