It's a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB, serial number 9QM415RM. It runs perfectly (can hear humming) but my laptop isn't picking it up.

try all usb inputs. if it still isn't try another computer. It should be found. Make sure it is plugged in just right or wiggle to see if it finds it. if not then maybe the hard drive is 3.0 usb and the computer is 2.0 just some thoughts

there is,open the 500gb external case and take out the hard drive. go to your nearest computer shop and pick up an empty external hard drive case for internal drives.make sure its a sata drive,get your hard drive and put it in and reconnect it to your computer. those cases run around 80 bucks to you may need to look online for one to get a better deal

ok here goes, my neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). is the power frequency different out in india, it's not just the voltages you have to watch!

If you can remove the hard drives and use a usb interface to connect them then software like filescavanger will recover files providing the hard spins up ok.

You can pick up a replacement cord at radio shack. they have universal cords that match the power rating.

Probably has a 5 year warranty. Go to Seagate's site, enter the model and serial numbers, and see what you find.

WIth the original freeagent disk in hand,call Seagate and ask if they can give you the product key based upon the sereal number on the disk. If you purchased freeagent on line and downloaded , they wil have a copy of your invoice purchase . Just contact then as ask again for your product key.
