I've never seen the first set of steps you mention. You always need to press the "learn" button first so the opener will be in the mode to capture the new code. As far as I know it is not necessary to hold the Enter button on the keypad (at least I never have). While the "learn" LED is lit on the opener, just key in the new code and press Enter.
Maybe you should try clearing the receiver first by pressing the "learn" button and holding it until the LED either goes out or starts flashing (depends on model). Then try reprogramming. Maybe the little computer is confused.

To answer your question the opener is in vacation mode. Press and hold for 3 seconds the button on your wall control with the lock icon. The green light will stop flashing and you will be back in business.
If your opener doesn't have safety sensors in the doorway this keypad will not work with it.

Make sure that when inserting the 9 volt battery that those red & black wires are not somehow pinched, twisted or stretched. I just fixed mine... The battery terminal was crushing one of the wires and preventing the battery to supply power to the keypad. I found it out by NOT securing the battery case door and my opener worked fine. Securing the battery case door with the screw and thightening, my opener DID NOT WORK. It was that simploe of a FIX!

Lets make sure you are programming it correctly, make sure the battery is new. Press and release the learn button on the motor. Within 30 seconds enter in the 4 digit code followed by the up/down button. The light bulb should flash once. If you can't get it to code in this way you will need to replace the keypad. Thanks BB
