Question about Mitsubishi VS-50705 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Liquid OK, I cant find any signs of any drippage from above, looks like this is from somewhere on the signal board, on the side where all the external connections are. The liquid is on the bottom side of the ant. input little box, thats where its the thickest but there is not any on the top side. ( The silver ant. input box is elevated from the circuit board. I cant find any signs of where else it could be from?

It could be from one of the capacitors in the tuner itself. Look at the board closely inside the tuner and see if you notice any of the capacitor leads being corroded with a gree substance on the leads that would indicate the capacitor is leaking.

A older set with a number of issues. If unplugged and rear cover removed there is a metal channel that runs left to right above the boards---look for any signs of white residue in it or from the tubes above it----if see ANY signs of clear liquid do not touch it.

You are looking for any traces of Glycol.

Sony KP48S65 sound works but picture does not work

I have a suggestion (this is a older set): unplug set, remove back cover.

There is a metal channel V shaped that runs left to right above the boards and just below the 3 large lens---look to see if any white residue trailing down from the lens/tubes into the channel-------GLYCOL.

If see any signs of liquid (even a little) do not touch it--toxic stuff and if it got onto the boards below the set is finished.

I have a Mitsubishi, probably since 2001. About 18 mos ago the problem began suddenly with no audio and no video. In checking I have been told it might be a convergence fix, however I get the code 2-4

2,4 is vertical problem.

The set will blank the 3 picture tubes but usually you will still have sound.

Another issue with these sets is GLYCOL which is a coolant much like anti-freeze but more concentrated and toxic that cools each of the tubes screens.

These sets had problems with it leaking from any of the 3 tubes down onto the boards---With speaker grill pulled off the front and the inspection plate behind it removed you from the front will see 3 large circuit boards.

The necks of the tubes are hanging down and the vertical circuit is on the middle board near the very front.

Some models if you look up the neck of the tubes will have a plastic tray to catch any Glycol--others do not-----those can get Glycol onto the boards.

Carefully look for any signs of liquid--does not need to be much and if you see signs DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YOUR HANDS as it will be absorbed into your body and is very Toxic.

This is the reason many landfills will not accept this type of set.

The Glycol is a clear liquid not unlike mineral oil in appearance--anything it gets on gets shorted as it is conductive.

Again, looking from front (middle board a tan color and board to right is green---) the green board to right is signal and process board--if glycol there it will look tarnished where connections are or even a white residue on the board.

If no Glycol the vertical circuit is causing this.

If Glycol on the vertical circuit it can be removed with water and dried--then the real issue is what to do about the leak.

I have answers for that but you need to see if GLYCOL is your problem.

YOU HAVE TO LOOK VERY CAREFULLY FOR THE GLYCOL as it is easy even for someone like me who has seen hundreds of these sets with leaks to see sometimes.

My Samsung HCM5525W won't turn on

A few possible reasons--the usual if dead is power supply or set is in protective shut down--means someone has to open, check for voltages in and out of the power supply.

The "its happening more and more" suggests a more sinister possible issue.

This set uses 3 picture tubes and is well known for the coolant in one or more (seen one with all three leaking) leaking the Glycol--as more leaks it gets worse.

If someone opens the set and looks for signs on the wires above the main boards and on the boards below (will be if there seen in first 6 inches or so from front of set--signs of what looks like even a small amount of clear liquid--Glycol has leaked.

DO NOT if you see signs of it touch it---very toxic and more toxic than antifreeze which it is except more concentrated.

It causes all sorts of problems as it dissolves metal leads and parts.

Let me know (you have to look carefully!) if you find this.

I turn the set on but i don't get a picture. I can hear the sound fine but evrything is black. when i hit the menu or input button the words come up in yellow but the screen also looks a dark gray. there...

It has no lamp, just the three picture tubes and they are not your problem.

I would suggest you do an inspection looking for any signs of Glycol leaks.

Each of the three tubes has a sealed area with this liquid in it, clear and very toxic.

Pull the front speaker grill off and remove the inspection plate behind it. There are three large circuit boards. Right to left as seen from the front---signal/control board green in color, Middle board tan colored----deflection/power and far left board main power and HV supply.

Leaks may be hard to see, it will not be a lot of liquid and or may appear as discoloration of parts. Leaks if there will be in first 3 inches or so of front of boards.

The green board is the most likely in your case---I will attach a photo of what it looks like and you will see the liquid on the square part on that board. The board has parts soldered to the TOP! and slight amounts may appear as discoloration of solder seen there.

As I said, you must look closely as even a tiny amount can cause real odd problems.

Let me know what you find and I will assist you.

If this helped, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

yes the signal board is famous for defective capacitors as are the other boards. Recently there have even been reports that even the small ( surface mounted) capacitors have been failing on a regular basis on the first generation DLPs

No picture, only thin line from side to side, audio good.

Sounds like the vertical circuit has failed. Once I find out what brand and model you have I can be of more asst. In most instances the vertical output i.c. and a few capacitors and sometimes a diode must be replaced. This is common on mitsubishi, hitachi and toshibas. This requires test equip. and solder/desolder equip. If your tv is a nec or samsung first look for a liquid on the circuit board which could short out any part of the circuitry. It would have dripped down from the tubes which are above the board and have a coolant chamber that is known to become leaky. Hope this is helpful, Russmann.

replacing the board requires no set up so it should run after replacement. as for the other problems that is unknown until you replace the parts you know are bad. it tough to say if any other boards were affected.

2 PROBLEMS

Your two problems are different . Your tv shutting down is not due to the tuners . First thing i would check is to unplug set and take the back off . On the left side is the board with your tuner on it . Look on that board to see if these is any liquid buildup on it. One of your picture tubes could be leaking causing set to shut down . This can also be causing your snowy picture problem as the liquid has started to spread . The metal braket above this board is where the liquid starts to trickle down from . Use a flashlight to see . If you see no liquid then you have hv sweep problem which would need to be checked out. If you still want to get a board www.ptscorp.com May have your board in stock . Good luck
