Start by relacing the fuel in the tank with fresh, check for a spark at the plug, if there is no spark try a new plug, still no spark replace the ignition unit.
Are you getting spark first of all. If you are getting spark do you have good gas? If you have good gas most likely your carb needs some attention maybe you had some old gas sitting in there and something inside is gummed up it might need cleaning.
Sounds like a common fuel problem you need to remove carb & fuel tank and unless you can get a compressor they need a good blast out you may even take carb apart & check diaghram they have very small jets in fact most lawnmower shops have a sonic bath for this
Try putting a SMALL amount of gas in the carb and see if it will start, if it does, it is a fuel problem, if it does not it is probably an electrical one
First check for spark. Remove the spark plug. Leave the spark wire connected. Hold the plug against the metal of the mower engine so you have a ground and can see the gap of the electrode where the spark jumps across. Have someone pull the starter cord and verify that you have a spark. Hold it by the threads of the plug so you don't get a little spark jolt yourself.
go to an auto parts store and get a can of starter spray (it's actually ether), Remove the lawnmower spark plug and spray a little ether in the plug hole. Put the plug back and tighten it and see if it starts. It will probably start, run for 5 or 10 seconds and then die. Repeat this procedure once or twice again and eventually it will start to draw gas from the lawnmower tank.
A seasonal tip. when you put the mower up for the winter, **** the remaining gas out of the tank, start the engine and let it run until it uses up the gas in the carburetor. This will make iot much easier to start in the spring
Hope this helps Good Luck Loringh PS Please give me a rating
