Question about AO Smith 1 1/2 HP 115/230V 56C Replacement Motor

1 Answer

I have an Aermotor nonsubmersible pump rpm 3450 1/2 hp model # c48b48c09 for my cistern. I thought I was out of water as I could only hear the pump humming and my washer only filled 1/2 up...but I am not out of water and the breaker is not tripped. Please tell me this is not the sign of needing a complete new pump?....Wow...with 2 small children and one income...I really am praying for some options here.

It sounds to me like there is a hole rusted through the discharge pipe of the pump. If you are able to
look into the cistern with a flash light while the pump is running. You might see water swirling around
the pump. This means the pump is good, but the pipe is bad.

I have a 1/2 Hp a.osmith **** for a well, it pumps up to pressure, turns off then continuosly pushes the water pressure out of the system within a minute or two then it turns on again? Check valve?

You didn't say which way the water was going. I am assuming back into the cistern and it that is so, yes, the check valve has failed or gotten full of trash. Change or clean it, might even be able to replace the flapper seal.

Grundfos pump leaking?

If it is starting and stopping, it most likely does have some type of leak. The check vavlve is normally installed on the suction side of the pump, and sometimes instead of a check vavlve or in addition to, there is a foot valve. A foot valve is just a check valve (usually with a screen) at the end of the line in the bottom of the cistern. If you have much suction lift, and the check valve leaks (or any leak in the suction piping) then the water will drop back into the cistern. This will also cause the discharge side of the pump system to drop in pressure, causing the pump to restart. You mentioned removeing the pressure tank, that tank keeps the pump from short cycling when you have low demand on the system. If the pump is higher than the cistern, and you don't see a check valve between cistern and pump then you most likely have a foot vavle in the cistern. Hopefully it's accessable by removing the pipe.

Hayward pump has a steady water leak between pump and motor

Replace the machanical seal in the pump. It seals the shaft opening through the pump and is about a $5 - $10 part.

Sta Right model P2RASF-182L (RPM 3450) sounds like the bearings are gone...turns on, but is very loud and gets very hot.  The water is not circulating either.

If the noise you are hearing is like a grinding, then the bearings are gone. Sta-Rite does not make the motors for their pumps, either AO Smith, or Centurian, makes them, so they recommend that you replace the motor with a new one. You can try a small motor repair shop in your area.

If it is an AO Smith motor, you may be able to find more information at the following website:
