You can use an online anti virus scanner an remover.

My cmputer is not freezing just the virus scan.

Probably the AV needs a update for the latest virus definitions available in the market. kindly update the AV online and try running the scan. It should solve the issue.

How to use antivirus safely to protect your system?

You should first store your Anti Virus(AV) program in a CD/DVD (pen drive not recommended) and while storing it you must use a 100% virus free PC or you use the CD you got while you purchased AV. You should install AV while your system is virus free and at that time no worm will damage your AV program (as at the installation time your AV does not work so existing virus in your system can attack your AV and it will not work later). Always activate your AV through internet. You must update the program or it will not work properly (after updation you will find your AV will catch more viruses from your system)

My computer infected by virus

it is a bad virus that won't let you do anything on the computer, follow the instructions on this link http://www.fixya.com/support/r7263144-clean_computer_from_viruses. If you can install programs on your computer, follow only steps 7 and 8 from that link.

What is the difference between Norton AntiVirus 2004 and Norton AntiVirus 2010 ?

Not much. Every second new viruses are created. To combat these, anti-virus software designers think of new ways to defend computers from these viruses but no one anti-virus can be 100% safe.

To combat new viruses, anti-virus programs download new 'definitions' or schemes to protect from new viruses.

If you like a direct comparison of the two versions, read below:

AV 2004 was designed for XP and older OSes. As of 2010 we have Win Vista and 7 with new kernel and user interface. To keep up with new changes, AV providers upgrade their software so that it will work flawlessly.

In simple words AV 2004 works similar to AV 2010 BUT for older Windows. AV 2010 should work with older Windows but it is primarily designed for 7's revamped UI and kernel.

If you had a chance to work on Win 98 and migrated steadily to Win 7 you would notice that older programs that ran on 98 look really outdated and 'boring' compared to new programs designed for 7.

Also note that companies stop providing support for old programs after some time they release the new product. One of their objectives is to encourage people to spend again or attract new customers which in turn will increase their revenue.

If you are using XP and AV 2004 you should not find it necessary to spend cash again unless Norton requires you to upgrade or they stop providing updates.

If you are a new customer and use Win 7, AV 2010 is a good idea. Before making a purchase, keep in mind that free options are also available for home users like AVG free (free.avg.com). I find it is quite satisfactory for an average user and I am using it past 5 years with little to no issues.

How to work anti virus software

the things you need to do on an antivirus sw are to update it and run a scan , these option you will get on the main window on the AV sw

nowadays these are the things that an antivfirus can do it itself .. so you can just install and forget .. as it does the update regularly and also there is a real time protection ... so if a virus tries to get in the AV will stop it

LAPTOP VIRUS

depending on the type of "malware" you have the AV software should be able to remove or quarantine it. Do you know the name of the virus/infection? Do you have an expired version of any AV software? If so remove it with manufacturer's "removal tool" before installing any "new" software.
If your laptop doesn't have any AV software or it's expired, I would go purchase PC Tools INternet Security or Webroot Antivirus w/ Antispyware.
Once installed, boot computer into safe mode (tap F8 while starting) and run full scan.
