I had the same problem and sent it back to be replaced. If you send it in, don't send it to the Thomson location in Texas. Call RCA and find out where to ship it to for a replacement.

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!!!! RCA Opal M2404-A Mp3 player.

"initializing" screen FIX By BustedBerry in Prattville Alabama

I had this same problem as well. I think this happens when the during the device preboot memory check.

This fatal error makes act as if the firmware is corrupted.
The RCA Opal M2404-A does NOT have a "Reset Hole" on the back.

To do a "System Reset" you must press and hold the "Menu Up/Down" button for 20 seconds.

    Restart it.
    The 2404-A should say:
" Please Wait.... Building database. This may take a few minutes"

About 5 or 10 mins later
    IT WAS FIXED!!!! :)

    Tips:
(If the above didn't work for you)

Mine was doing the same thing, with a little trial and error I found that this player will not recognize the .wav (wave) format songs. It will only recognize mp3 and wma type formats. When I deleted all of the wave formatted songs from the mp3 player and disconnected it from my computer and turned it on it worked perfectly. I hope this helps.

It's either the sigmatell chip thats not working properly or the firmware is falty.
my opal m4204 quit working on me because the sigmatel chip fried for no reason. so now when ever i start it or rather try to the chip super heats in 3-4 seconds to the potin that it will burn. i don't kno where to get a new piece or even take it to get it fixed but thoese are most likely the problem.
