Appreciate the help. I ultimately tried the Dell online tech chat and gave the tech person access to my system. He got into the control panel and unchecked some boxes and the shutdown now goes smoothly. There was no spyware or adware.

End the programs just by click on end program.

You might want to jot down which ones are giving you the problem and look them up in Google and see if it is adware or spyware in your computer causing the problem.

You can download Windows Defender from Microsoft.com for free to try to wipe it out if it is adware and/or spyware.

How to avoid losing your work in case a program stops responding

Sometimes, while doing some specific work on your PC or browsing the internet, the program you're using suddenly stops responding without any apparent reason. If you hadn't been saving your work regularly, you'll most likely lose it when Windows prompts you to close the program.

There's however a solution that could help you avoid such frustration. Here are the steps to follow in case a program stops responding :

1. Once you encounter such a problem, don't close the program you're using.

2. Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

3. In the "Processes" tab, find "explorer.exe", choose it and click "End Process" on the bottom right.

4. Click "Yes" (Everything you see in the background will disappear but don't panic, it will come back).

5. Click "File" on the top left.

4. Choose "New Task (Run...)"

5. Write "explorer.exe" in the box.

And everything comes back! You can now resume your work...

PC shuts down. When you turn on the pc it shuts

try to change the source, that should solve the problem. But before try reset CMOS. (if you don`t know how to do it by jumper simple remove the battery from the mainboard for 5 minutes and then plug it back on..and after that turn on your computer and press F1 for default settings)

Urlmon can't be found

goto Start--> Run and then type msconfig , now go to "Start UP " tab and then in the down pane you can find many services that start up when the computer is turned on. You can find the missing DLL profile there , the box may be unchecked or else select the option " Enable All" then click Apply and then OK. The error will be solved , and moreover this wont create any problem with the error message displayed. U can skip the error message if it again comes. This error message is due to the uninstallation of any program recently.

Pc hangs during shut down

Hi,
As far as Free Antivirus is concerned, you can download Avira from http://www.free-av.com/ It has the highest detection rates & also extremely light on the system.

Dll driving me nuts

Hello EricS777

The part where it looks like your xp stuff and vista stuff switch drives is normal. Only the Operating System associates the hard drives by letters this does not mean your hard drive files are switching. This happens because D: drive is Root of Vista OS and Root of any OS in windows gets the C: drive lettering.

dwwin.exe, drwtsn.exe dll is the "Microsoft Application Error Reporting" tool.

I think the message means that something is crashing during system shutdown. When the crash occurs the OS launches dwwin.exe to report the error, however the windows operating system is shutting down and so the application can't launch make the system lockup or hang.

Your problem isn't with dwwin.exe, you need to find out what is actually crashing at shutdown.

If you can`t find out what it is, try going to Administrative Tools/Services and disable the “Error Reporting Service”. You don`t want that running anyway.

Also right click My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Error Reporting
Put a check at both
Disable Error Reporting
But notify me when critical errors occur

Then, if that was the cause and the message stops, we`ll have to try to identify the cause.

Blue screen - kmode exception not handled - ntoskrnl.exe

I feel some program running in the background is causing the problem.

Try using msconfig and disabling unneeded softwares from startup. Then restart the PC and try to shut it down check.

Let me know what happens.

Windows fails to execute programs

You are infected. If you were to run a free program like Dr. Web or Malware bytes you would see the infection. Unless you can reboot the machine eliminating the registry or tag your harddrive to another machine, then I would suggest you take it to somebody. I'm in Scottsdale, AZ or Walkerton, IN.

Shut Down

Shelew, Do you by chance have Comcast High-speed access? ?sdc-Scheduler? is a program that is part of Comcast?s software installation and specifically is a diagnostic support program Comcast techs use if needed. If you do have the software installed chances are good you?ve never used it and won?t need it. If that is the case you can uninstall it and make your problem go away. Go to the Windows Add/Remove programs utility, look for a program called ?ComcastSUPPORT?, highlighting it and clicking on the Remove button. Let us know if this works and please don?t forget to rate this posting.
